ps. go with an intel processor.

ive always been an AMD guy... more bang for my buck, or it was like that back in high school when i was alot more up with current computer specs... maybe it isnt anymore??? :conf:

and re: build it myself... not savvy enough myself personally to do it... and the shop i usually go to in town, im just sick of dealing w/ him... small things always seem to crop up that annoy me... and im not convinced id get a similar one from him for much cheaper than around $550.

(though it is nice that he fixes his own computers for free for as long as you own them, ie. i just mean no charge for labour, just parts) :)

intel has a great range of core2duo chips that are better than amd. and they also have a budget line which can perform just as well as the normal line. since they've been coming out with new versions, the prices have dropped on the older stock (when i say old i mean like 5 months like my E6420 which i bought in june). now they have the E6xxx, E4xxx, and the E21xx. the only major differences are is the amount of cache and the fsb speed. getting a E4xxx is a good comprimise between value and speed imo. and u can overclock in the future as well which will take u to much high speeds.

check out www.directcanada.com for parts. they have free shipping with an order over 300$. and u only pay the GST since they are located in BC. i bought all my parts from them and shipping is quite fast. 2 days and it was at my door.

so just compare the prices with the parts that you would get in the dell that you want, and see if it comes out cheaper. and dude, if u know how to put in a video card and a hard drive, i think putting together the rest is just as easy.

you guys are fast, thanks. Now how do I shut off my computer? :stongue:

Seriously, thanks again ;)

Unplug it from the socket.

personally i would keep all of my media and stuff like that on the external, if you have a ton of free space on the external you may as well use it, keep the drive with your operating system on it as clear as possible

AMD used to be very popular for gaming and everything up until Intel released their Core 2 Duo chips which currently right now is raping AMD in sales and in advancement of technology. AMD is really behind in terms of CPU technology, hopefully they can try to catch up with their release of true quad core in a couple months and quad core video cards.

So, QUESTION IS:

Bc this is going to be a "DELL" computer, am i going to have issues installing my current ATI card in it? Im assuming Dell shouldnt be a bitch and require i purchase a video card that they offer specifically in order for it to install right and work...

just want to make sure...

Thanks for feedback.

You just gotta make sure that the Dell computer takes the same slot video card you have I'm assuming it's AGP... newer computers within the last couple years are mainly PCI-Express.

Also, it's probably a lot better to build it yourself, cause you get to pick whatever you want in it and it's better quality parts compared to Dell. If you want, tell me your budget and I can price together a system for you :P

This is a really good deal right now, only thing is you gotta get your own operating system.

though its computer related, just not about DVDs.

My compy is driving me nuts (even after being freshly reformatted 2 months ago... she's just lagging and too slow with GENERAL PC use... not even talking games... just getting around XP, you know, the net (firefox), music (winamp), docs (word/excel), etc. just average joe compy ...

Its a Win XP, AMD XP 3000+, 1 gig RAM (the basics)

So, thinking of just grabbing a cheap Dell... for about 550$ i can get a reasonably superior compy than my current one...

Win Vista (not saying thats better), AMD 64 X2 Dual-Core 4000+, 2 gig RAM (just the basics).

What im curious about... Im thinking to order it w/ just the integrated video card, bc i already have a ATI Radeon 9550 (256mb, 128 -bit) which im happy with, it lets me play Guild Wars just fine.

and i dont feel like paying $60 for the 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8300GS (which isnt better), or $150 for the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT-DDR3 which is better, but I dont really need.

As long as your vid card is compatible with the MoBo there shouldn't be a problem. Most new systems support PCIE but not AGP... So make sure both are the same format.

Other than that, if your new system does have an intigrated vid card be sure to disable it in the bios when using your Radeon.

I built my 'new' pc around my old video card mainly because it's one of the most expensive components. The down side of this is that my card uses AGP8X which is somewhat outdated now so when i choose to upgrade i'll have to build a new system entirely. I've got the beast over clocked though and it runs everything i want it to. (TF2!!)
