My C Drive

Sorry if this annoys some people, but it's a problem i really need solved. Will delete as soon as it is.

Whenever I try and open my C drive, windows explorer hangs. Whether I'm opening it, trying to copy something, trying to paste something, if I open C drive, the explorer hangs. If I want to open a file via say winamp and I do the File - Open - Choose a file from C, then it works, but going My Computer - C: - it hangs.

I can't access anything because of this.
Can anyone help? Is it a windows problem? Because the other drive D: works just fine.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a HP Laptop

Cheers in advance.

how about disabling Indexing?

right click C:/ from My Computer, click properties. At the bottom of the screen that pops up, there should be an checkbox for "[]Allow indexing...". UNCHECK it and apply to all folders.
It is virtually useless and stupid as , so don't worry about messing anything up.
There are other things you can do involving the registry to speed up Explorer. If no one else bothers with it, i'll tell you later, but I'm tired and my teacher made me mad

what about a nice defrag?

there is a basic rundown tutorial from basic to advanced at tweakguides.com for Windows Vista.

Don't really want to speed it up, just want that error to go away.

If that indexing thing doesnt work, I'll defrag it overnight.

Thanks for the help

umm indexing aint the problem. its hanging for some other reason. download processexplorer and autoruns from www.sysinternals.com. also download hijackthis and post your log. there is something else causing this.

I was under the impression that Indexing catalogs all the hard disks files for faster searching and faster explorer seeking? I think it also has its own space-hungry database to see what folders are used most often to that searching/seeking those folders is more efficient

:conf:

And if i remember correctly, it also keeps HD file/folder structure up-to-date with the local network, which (for a lot of home users) it just a few CPU cycles (ping request)

while this is true, it doesnt make explorer hang ANY time you use it directly. its fine if he is browsing via an application but the moment he trys to access explorer directly its hanging. if indexing was causing this it would hang every time. no matter what hes using.

Warning Smakmagik! Warning!!!

Your drive is about to go kaput, the FAT files have somehow been changed by WIN32, this is an unknown problem on WINXP {dont know if the same on VISTA), maybe you installed some new hardware that your OS "tried to recognize but couldnt", and all your files, while they may no be erased permanently, will not be available..

This happened to me, and had to get a Recovery software to get all my back
FILE SCAVENGER 3.1 did the dirty, dirty for me..I got my back!

sounds like it could be some spyware/virus activity going on. Reminds me of vundo and it messing with normal windows things, like preventing explorer.exe (start bar) from starting up.

It just has that feel to it. If you want to give it a quick shot, google "vundu fix" and run it in safe mode. (It may be tricky and not let you get into the normal interface i.e. start bar, in that case hit Ctrl+alt+del and start up task manager and then File > new task > and then find your vundufix.exe file.) Hope this helps.

he didnt lose files. so your diagnosing his problem incorrectly. its a brand new machine which all of a sudden started doing this but he can browse via an application outside of explorer. which would mean his drive is fine.

Okay, if I read your initial post correctly, I had the same problem on my XP Desktop. I had an HP printer installed. It would take minutes to access "my computer". All I'd get is the search flashlight icon. As soon as I uninstalled the printer, explorer ran at normal speed. I've tried other HP printers as well, and they all do the same thing on my system. I mean, it doesn't surprise me because HP printer installs are like over a gig! Who knows what the heck they're installing. I tried minimal installs and I always had the same problem. I now have an Epon and no explorer issues.

So check if you have an HP printer. The fact that it's an HP computer could be an issue in itself but I doubt it.
