Okay, if I read your initial post correctly, I had the same problem on my XP Desktop. I had an HP printer installed. It would take minutes to access "my computer". All I'd get is the search flashlight icon. As soon as I uninstalled the printer, explorer ran at normal speed. I've tried other HP printers as well, and they all do the same thing on my system. I mean, it doesn't surprise me because HP printer installs are like over a gig! Who knows what the heck they're installing. I tried minimal installs and I always had the same problem. I now have an Epon and no explorer issues.
So check if you have an HP printer. The fact that it's an HP computer could be an issue in itself but I doubt it. |
if you were smart you would just install the driver and not the software. this keeps the installation to >5mb. :D |

Yeah, that would probably help, but I'm going back to HP at this point.

The answer to all of your problems can be summed up in one five-letter word:
Linux |

stuff that is just there. no command needed. like a "my computer" thing to see how much space on each drive. its a bit different on linux.
btw: is there a way to make df show it in MB instead of KB? |

I haven't installed an HP printer, as I said, the machine i brand new, less than 3 weeks old, and I bought an Epson printer yesterday, and only downloaded its vista updated drivers, haven't installed the software yet. But that was yesterday, this explorer problem has been going on for a week. As gehzumteufel said, it runs fine when opening from an application, but direct usage causes it to say windows explorer has stopped working and needs to close down' |

umm indexing aint the problem. its hanging for some other reason. download processexplorer and autoruns from www.sysinternals.com. also download hijackthis and post your log. there is something else causing this. |
I disabled indexing and the problem's still there, so you re right.
Trying the processexplorer and autoruns and hijackthis now, will post what the results are. |

I downloaded Hijack this, and it showed me a list of problems, but told me not all are unsafe, so I should show my log file to 'more knowledgeable' folks, so here goes
http://www.mediafire.com/?cuncl3t4mjc
i also got autoruns and process explorer, but have no clue what to do with them. |

I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Hmm. As a troubleshooting step: trying doing the same things in safe mode.
If it still has the problem then its probably a virus/spyware embedded in windows. |

after looking at the hijackthis log there aint anything you will find using process explorer or autoruns. as bored suggested it sounds like some sort of virus embedded. i saw some symantec entries. do you have norton antivirus? try to get NOD32 downloaded and installed and run that. |
