You really should figure out what you're talking about before you speak. "4/4" is the time signature. A tremendous amount of classical music has this time signature. "4/4" is not the correct term for a kick. Unless, of course, I'm misunderstanding you.
Anyways...
I love classical music. The first instrument I learned to play was the violin in fourth grade, and I taught myself the string bass in seventh grade and continued to play all the way into my sophomore year of high school. I try to attend the Seattle Symphony whenever there's something good there. The last performance I caught was Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. The highlights, though, were their past performances of the 1812 Overture and when they had Itzhak Perlman as guest performer and conductor.

It's because classical music doesn't entail a "cool" lifestyle that people can conform to, to replace their own lack of character and personality.
people like to give themselves a genre, because they are weak minded little bitches that have nothing going for themselves.
Hahaha.
Too true.

Its not something I'd bump in my truck but I take an hour or two once a every other week to listen to some. It doesn't make you any more cultured than anyone else though, and certainly doesn't mean you have better taste.

mmm...that Gorecki piece was great, Love how it build so slowly yet very melodic. You can hear the higher key tht just screaming to get out to join the whole piece together! WOW!
I'm been getting into classical for awhile (last year) mostly slower melodic kind, like you said where it repeats but in a different key.
It's too bad tht not lot of younger people (22 here) are not into it. I really appreciate this kind of music.
Composers I like are Vladimir Martynov, Arvo Part, Vivaldi and some Mozart. I'm a sucker for piano pieces too.
MrJiveBoJingles, If you have any suggestions of some good composer similar to tht kind of sound I would really appreciate it. PMed to me, Thanks.

I listened to quite a lot of classical music when I was a kid. My mother was kinda into that and tried to educate me in that way. So when I was like 6 years old, I started to play the piano and listened to Tchaikovsky's B moll concert for piano, Smetana's 'Má Vlast' (My Country in the english version), Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Though I don't listen to classical as much nowadays, I still have a huge amount of respect for it.
The Gorecki piece you posted is wonderful btw.

Yeah yeah. "Classical music reflects the tastes of the upper class and these days people have stopped trying to emulate the upper class as much, thus the reason they no longer pretend to like the classical music they never actually liked in the first place."
I'm not sure I buy this stuff. I went most of my life without knowing anything about classical music, liking none of it, until I actually listened to some of it in college, and now I love it.
It's not that people pretend to like something they don't like.
There's just what I'd call a "positive exposure": If we lived, I don't know, 200 years ago, when classical music enjoyed more popularity, we'd certainly be exposed to it a lot more often. It'd receive good reviews from social critics, it'd be highly regarded by society in general and we'd be bombarded by classical music. So, sure, you may still not like it in such environment, but you're more susceptible to listen to something you like and make your way in.
That's not what happens to classical music nowadays. It's sometimes seen as something nerdy and boring, and you can live your whole life without being exposed to much classical music. So, in that context, you probably won't even look for more. But, as it happens to you, you're now in a more intellectual circle (i.e. uni), and you're being exposed to many different ideas. I don't know whether you were exposed to the music or decided to go for it yourself, but regardless of how it happened, you were open to this "new" music.
You were willing to try and go deeper. Most people aren't.

Granted, Marxist theories of taste may apply to some people who feel socially obligated to simulate a taste for "high culture," but I really don't think I'm one of those. Nobody pressed the stuff on me and I won't be looked down on by any of my friends or relatives for not liking it, so I generally think unfalsifiable theories like this, if they pretend to universality, ought to go in the crapper. If they're just suggesting one reason a person might possibly pretend to like classical, then that's fine I guess, but they're less interesting that way, even if more plausible.
No, it's not that people pretend to like classical music, or Boudier was not just guessing. True, it does seem to have some Marxist influence, but that book was a result of an empirical research (i.e. it's falsifiable if you do some research of your own), and if you talk about music you don't like, you can easily see that most people will tell you they dislike the music of highly stigmatised groups (i.e. hip hop, country and so on).
