Modern day scientists feel (and have proof to within something like > 97% accuracy) that the universe was originally an incredibly condensed mass of energy, about the size of a marble that existed for sometime before it became unstable and exploded, unleashing massive amounts of matter and energy into timespace (the big bang, no?). This made for the beginnings of the universe we now know. If one views the universe using an infrared telescope, one can see the massive, and incredibly brighly colored remnants of energy released by this explosion. It essentially looks like a huge streak of fire which stretches across the universe, spanning from its center (just look for google images).
As far as the small structure of condensed energy that the universe once was, scientists believe it must have arisen out of dark matter (which is what over 70% of the universe is composed of). Unfortunately, scientists are still working on figuring out exactly what dark matter is and what its nature is.

If you were looking for something a bit more religious then the closest I can give you is...
Assuming that:
God = a conscious entity, and God is encompassed by all things and therefore equivalent to/synonymous to the universe itself, then the universe could have possibly created itself in 4th dimensional hyperspace. Feel free to look up the various dimensions of hyperspace. The 4th one deals with time.

edit: by the way I'm not insinuating that homosexuality is wrong, got no probs with it.
