Okay while it is true that some people are extremely fat because of gluttony, you have to understand that some of the people who are obese and over-eat are that way because eating for them is a coping mechanism. I read a study not long ago that proved that eating can be addictive. The gist of it (that i can remember) is that when we eat, we produce dopamine - the neurotransmitter that, among other things, allows us to experience pleasure. The study had found that people who suffer from obesity had defects in the dopaminergic responses to food; which is to say that they needed more food in order to feel "better", much like a drug addict.
That study also found that a lot of those people knew of the health problems they were facing but were unable to stop themselves from eating because, as i said, eating is their way of coping with stress in their lives.
Now i'm not saying everyone is like that, and i'm not saying it's okay because they're addicts. All i'm saying is don't be so quick to judge, not everyone eats just because they're complete gluttons. |
in other words, they eat because they lack self discipline?
they get no sympathy from me |

yep thats true, too> not an excuse for everyone of course. Some people are just fat and lazy and gluttons. But, take me for example....I am no where near obese (see avatar pic) but I was born into a very large family and have zero metabolism. I am still on the bigger side. I work out 3 days a week minimum and eat perfectly (I HATE greasy/fatty food, it makes me feel sick....and I control portions).
Am I skinny though? Not even close, nor will I ever be. But it pisses me off when people might think that I or other people like myself are lazy and eat too much..... because I take care of myself better than most skinny people do.
^^just an fyi before the comments and judgements about "all" big people come rolling in........ |

I saw an article in the paper about it. Toronto Star I think. And saw a special about it as well....not fifth estate, but something like that. maybe 20/20.
It showed how the parts of the brain that goveren or are goverened by addiction look identical regardless of the substance/habit. Addiction is addiction. |

our newest employee is pretty big (i'd say 300lbs at least)
turns out he's having gastric bypass surgery, as well as subsequent plastic surgery to remove all the excess skin
his weight problems were a result of other health issues, but this guy doesn't eat a lot at all |

comments like these are the reason that I wrote that whole post above ^^. You really ought to know, being an adult, that people have very different reasons for weight gain....... and until you go around asking every one of them what their own reasons are, you have no right to assume why they are big. Pretty easy for thin people who may have never had issues with weight, to make assumptions. |

ok then let me be more specific....where I work...there are quite a few overweight ppl and i noticed that most of them never eat much during lunch, some of them talked about their weight struggles openly and..said it's not so much that they eat during the day while at work ,school etc...it's when they're at home...that's when it's a struggle for many of them and i saw a report on tv as well referring to what i said earlier..that obese people do tend to feel a sense of shame if they eat more than others while in public...bc they feel as if ppl will look at them and judge them...and i'm not saying ALL BIGGER PEOPLE DO..so don't take it so personal....by the way I understand what u said about many ppl having a naturally slower metabolism and than many bigger ppl might be a lot healthier than some of the naturally skinnier people..can't say i disagree with that |

YAY WE WIN
We're the biggest potsmokers AND we're the most obese. Canada's like the Rodney Dangerfield of the entire world.
Hmm.. I'm hungry. Better get to work on helping us keep our record(s). |

Bull. They can eat however much they want, they just have to exercise; these people are lacking discipline on both fronts. It's pure laziness - they'll try any asinine fad diet but heaven forbid they should actually eat less or sweat a little. Many of these same people refuse to cook or clean either. They're true couch potatoes.
Excuses abound. I'm too busy, I can't handle physical activity, blah blah blah. I often spend 12 hours or more a day on some sort of work, and still find time to get some exercise in spite of a severely ed up shoulder joint. Here's one easy way to make the time: stop watching so much ing TV. Almost every excuse-maker I know somehow manages to find several hours every week for that particular activity. |

Right, well i'm glad you are able to come up with your own conclusions in regards to results of a research that people with actual qualifications in regards to the human psyche have found. Of course you know better though, I mean really, these researchers are just wasting their time, go to Diginut for all the answers! |
