Yep, and you really should show up 10-15 min earlier as mentioned. In any job really. |

Oddly, when I read the thread title, I thought Lira was using 'London' style English.
Londoner speak: How late is well late?
Everyone else says: How late is very late? |

I do sound like a Londoner with some sort of speech impairment when I speak English, but that's just a coincidence :p |

at my last job I usually came between 9:45 and 10:15
i would just stay until like 7 pm or 8
sometimes after crazy parties i would come in after lunch and then stay late for a few days after.
if i got into the office at nine chances are only one other person would even be there |

Yeah I don't understand how someone can be 5-10 minutes late EVERY day (like my bf, lol). Just ing leave 5-10 minutes earlier! Jesus!
Mind you, my bf works for his parents, and they're not gonna fire him, so.... |
Well, I didn't think it mattered, so that's why - in spite of all sorts of problems I've been having - I thought the important thing was "to get it going" in spite of these few minutes.
I'm probably going to camp at university now...

That's exactly what I was used to :p
edit: Most people in my former job arrived almost thirty minutes late, but they did all they had to do rather quickly. I was one of the first people there almost everyday, and I would get there a few minutes late as well.
That's why I was surprised... I think this "9:00" means "9:05~9:15" is mostly a Latin thing :p (comparing your answer to djsphere's)
edit-2: Come to think of it, disregard my Latin comment, my boss (who is a foreigner) usually gets there after me :p |

I guess it depends on the job, really. I would imagine at a place where the day ends at 5, being late cuts into productivity time.
I think it's really more an indication of what kind of person you are/your level of reliability/professionalism/whatever. Some people take that seriously, some people don't. |

hmm... I don't really think so. I thought about what Mikey said and, yeah, the environment where I work is usually very laid-back, but that's not really the case.
Given the fact that there's no one else working with me (i.e. the probability of letting someone down during these first minutes is nil), that I don't leave my workplace until everything is done (so I do tend to leave 10~15 minutes later as well), and that I actually had to rush in order to get there are some of the reasons why I didn't mind it that much: I was there for an X amount of hours, and eventually worked all these hours.
What I found interesting, however, is that it does seem to be cultural: everyone else (in Brazil) I asked said they arrived either on time or, sometimes, 5~10 minutes late. Early? No one, unless they were giving classes and had to be there in order to prepare a few things (which is something I also do, when I teach).
edit: Actually, now this is about informal environments - it's a known fact that you should not arrived in a social gathering on time here. If you're invited to a party that begins at 8, you should, at least, drop by at 9. |
