Yeah i hate watching DJs use ableton for the whole set, they might as well just put in a CD and stand up there like idiots
I dont know how ableton works exactly, but to me it just looks like they are up ther lining songs up on the computer and then having the program create a perfect mix for them.... seems pretty useless to me |
The essence of Ableton DJing IMO is that a DJ can be more creative in his set without spending time on stuff like beat matching and transitions.
Unfortunately many DJs don't use Ableton to its full utility. (And some DJs go way too overboard) |

yeah seriously i dont notice much of a difference mixing wise when they have ableton up there, however that could be that i dont know the songs well enough.....
to be honest I dont even like too much mixing, i just like the basics like making sure you drop the track in at the right time, cutting out the bass once in a while or whatever, but besides that, as long as the track selection is good, the beatmatching is tight, and the set is pounding thats all I need
an overuse of effects and too much friggin with the EQs just ruins it for me
just chose the right tracks, put them in the right order, and drop them at the right time! F**K off with all the effects! |

retardo rules get bodies into clubs.
not to mention g&d are producers first and foremost so that is where the bulk of their crowds are stemming from. why is it so horrible to want to hear the tunes that made them headliners? sure i am open to artists evolving their sound but me i really don't think it's the crime of the century if i want to hear mindcircus as well. |

I was at the guv last night, stayed in the gallery the whole night, and am not a trance fan.....
but i am just wondering... dont these big trance DJs basically just play the same songs every single time they come here, and its basically just anthem after anthem, ie. i heard that "till there was you" song which i have heard a million times before...
I dont get this
if Sander K, for example, came and dropped satisfaction by benny benassi or something I would be disgusted! but it seems like this is what trance is based on.....
can anyone comment? |
HELL NO, not Armin van Buuren. He usually plays really new stuff, tracks that have been newly released or that aren't released yet. I doubt PvD and Above & Beyond play the same tracks everytime they come here either.
anyways, who was DJing in the Gallery???? |

The night was pretty cool. G&D satisfied.
I was there with 2 great friends so I can't really complain.
It was great to see the TAs I bumped in to!
Hearing "Arcadia" & "Tracking Treasure down" was really shweet.
Still I remain disappointed with the attitude of the crowds at Guv. Alot of crap to deal with just to get to washrooms or bars or the patio.
AND WTF WAS WITH THE $10 FOR ALL ACCESS TO GET INTO THE UPSTAIRS ROOMS?!?!?!?!? COMMON!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would have spent 5 times that much on drinks up there, but noooo... they just HAD to split off the place. |

I know I'd be bored as hell if I played same tune every freaking gig for years. |
yawn.
once you produce a hit that gets a thousand+ people into a club just cuz they want to hear it, and you get to witness the reaction when you drop it, i think your above statement would change ever so slightly. |

I thought the night was great. It sounds to me like alot of the complaints are general things that people will always complain about. IThere were weaker parts of the set, but there were also parts where they had the groove perfect and the floor was hoppin with energy. (btw, does anyone have a track ID for the song they played around 2:26am..2 songs before "the space we are" - I lost my f'in mind). The one thing I've always liked about them is their diversity, and that really showed last night.
Other than the DJing, what else is there to say about the night. Not too many sketchpads. Enough room to dance. only one real complaint:

MEMO TO GUV TECHNICAL CREW
Regarding use of horn
Use horn AFTER (i.e., not DURING) a good mix. Proper use of the horn in this manner gets people excited and has a fun effect. Failure to do so results in loud, blaring horn sounds that kind of, sorta, just a little bit overpower the nice, smooth transitions from one song to the next. It also has the effect of pissing people the f&%! off. |

Jon you bring up some good points. especially regarding "any true fans would grow / evolve with their favourite artists."
However while my direction / taste as a dj have strongly drifted towards all things house and tech, I am glad that I can still go out with my best friends on a night like last night and rip it like the old days to those "classics". They wouldn't be classics if djs stopped playing them... |
