poll: intersexuals

doing a research paper on transsexuals and intersexualities and came across this issue.

but i'm actually looking for real answers...kind of

so. if you were born with both male and female parts, would you have prefer your parents to have

1. turned you into a guy
2. turned you into a girl
3. left you with both and let you pick your own gender and sex when you get old enough

i think i'd rather be turned into a girl, because its probably easier for a girl to handle having a guy brain and being a cross-dresser and even after surgery..easier to look like a feminine guy, than to be a guy and later decide to become a female and deal with the ridicule of being a male to female transsexuals (they get harassed a lot more)

id have to agree on that.

wow, that's quite the topic!

the idealist in me says #3...to let the person decide at an appropriate age.

- but what is an "appropriate age"?
- how does a child get through puberty, high school, etc. if they haven't made that decision yet (assuming they have the psychological maturity or self-awareness to make that decision by that time in the first place)
- will they have the supportive environment at home, at school, etc. to be left to make that choice when they are ready?

There are no doubt many more relevant questions...

I'm assuming you've thought of this, but there's probably a wealth of information available through GBLT associations in Toronto and elsewhere and in peer-reviewed psychological/medical journals.

I'm relatively sure that there are actual individual or group case studies out there on this very topic that could provide some insight...?

i think #3 is definitely out of the question

it might cause a child so much confusion and insecurity (why am I different then other kids?), even torment, and as a parent, how would you even explain it all to the kid when he/she start asking questions? what about giving them a name? what gender do they get in their passport?

i think if it would come to parents deciding, it should be done from a purely medical point of view - whatever procedure is less invasive and painful

this totally reminded me of the episode of House, M.D., where the model has undeveloped testicles, and has a testicular cancer

i think i'd probably go with # 3
I saw a documentary on this and many of the ppl born that way who later found out about their condition were furious their parents didn't wait and let them decide which way to go

And the parents get the blame if the kids go through a really crappy childhood because she/he/it is not a guy or a girl to other 'normal' kids?

andrea i think you need to point out that inter sexual is when someone is born with internal female parts or internal male parts and their external genitlia is not distinct so it is transformed to whatever seems best or most distinct... some of these children dot really get to choose which sex they get to be....

my prof for human sexuality class is the host of sex toys and chocolate (the tv show) she pointed out that most often now the children are left with what they are born with and let mature till puberty.... some end up with breasts or facial hair showing their more predominant sex and they then usually end up favouring this one.....

while it may be partially scarring to a child to not know what sex they are, would it not be more scarring to grow up with a penis and then grow breasts? or to grow up with a vagina and then have your voice drop and grow facial and chest hair?

its a hard choice but i think the individual should be allowed to make it on their own.... being educated through primary school by private or home schooling till puberty and then having the surgery could save alot of emotional scaring during highschool... at least they could enter this stage of their lives confident about their sex and sexuality

i'm sure the childhood period wouldn't be easy but this decision affect the rest of their life, not just the childhood...i'm pretty sure the kid would still thank them later

David Reimer was a very famous Canadian who was sexually reassigned

while he was not intersexual he was one twin of 2 boys.... he had a botched circumcision and it was decided better to just rearrange his genetilia and raise him as a girl.... his story is one of the most well known examples given in caes like this....

sad... even thought he finally found out he was a boy and lived as a man for the last few years of his life... he committed suicide out of mass depression over the whole thing...

I would've preferred my parents picking whichever sex for me when I'm a baby and never tell me that I was born with both :D
