The landscape has changed, no?

The promoter still has to mingle around the party .. make sure people are happy... those facebook groups still need to be managed.

GL's are away for clubs to connect with people and make them feel that they are getting something for nothing.

I do believe promoters get a cut of the door.. the more people they bring into the club the more money they make.

To really benefit from using a GL look at it like the air miles program.. the more loyalty you show to a promoter the more likley it is you will really benefit (free admission)

I find guestlists/VIP areas to be glorified methods of segregation in nightclubs. In most situations I find it doesn't make much of a difference to have these perks anyway !

Well I guess that's where we differ.

I don't need somebody talking to me, making sure I am having a good time. I can figure that one out on my own.

I don't think the value proposition of the guestlist is all that compelling. Saving $5. Big deal. For all those people who decide to go to the club at the last minute, and then have to wait in the rain/cold while all those guestlist people walk by them, I'd say it sucks.

Promoters definitely have something to lose if guestlists are abolished. Clearly. I wonder what the real impact on the club would be though. I'm not saying that the club shouldn't hire hostesses or some other "customer service" type staff. The more the merrier, I say.

I HATE the Air Miles Program. Don't even get me started...(I'll explain it to you some other time Shelley)...lol...

as a customer it is rare that I see any value in Guestlist other then maybe getting a shorter line...yeah there are times where you get reduced entrance fee but those are limited times....if clubs are going to have guestlists then how about giving something to the guest....if entrance to the club is the only benefit I am getting then I will just show up earlier and make sure I get in.

as for the VIP area.....well that is a whole other kettle of fish which I am completely against.

When I am doing a list for a club, I refer to myself as a host.

When I'm running the show, I'm the promoter and hire hosts.

Right. I can think of 15 people I know alone that always get in free. And many others that never have to wait in line, without greasing the bouncers.

So, looks like you're the one who clearly isn't in the know.

Guestlists are good.

Like someone mentioned, it's a clientèle loyalty thing. On a certain night, I pick the Guv as the venue to visit (or Circa or whatever), and in exchange, I expect a little extra. I don't mind paying the regular door fee, but I do think that skipping the line is OK.

Shaya or John Tang can probably clarify this, but the guestlist probably gives you a fairly accurate reading of how many people are going to come in on any given night. It also guarantees that at the very least, the die-hard fans of the venue (of the music, whatever) are going to be in.

In most clubs in Toronto the average spent on the bar per person is under $15.

Totally unrelated, but still interesting...

That means in most clubs people get 2.5 drinks per night on average? Doubtless you are well informed, but could this be a mistake? Is the figure closer to $20-$30 maybe?

Regardless, at $15 a pop, average capacity of say 400, that's $6,000. Staff, bouncers, etc, subtract $2,000. Booze and venue, subtract another $2,000. And throw down another $1,000 for misc costs.

That's $1,000 clear profit a night just on booze alone. That's not including the bottle service crowd and the cover (which in itself is another $2,000 or more).

I would say then net profit every night of an average venue is $2,000 per operating night.

Can someone tell me if my math is off? Am I missing something?

so you're saying it's MORE people?

I thought you were saying that there is no list at all.

I'm saying that there isn't an exclusive list limited to only 15-20 people. Well no, I'm sure there is...but one can still get in the club free and bypass the line without being on it. There are other "lists".

a big one, is the debt taken on to get the money needed to open in the first place. that's hundreds of thousands of dollars in most cases, if not more.

to put it this way, if you need $250,000 just to get the doors open. On a 5 year term at zero interest, you're talking over $4100 per month.

I'm not going to break it down more then that, but there's waaaaaaay more involved then you think. I didn't even realize it until i got so heavily involved in working in this industry.
