Ok, so if this girl was going to die because of leukemia and the failed bone marrow transplant then why did they go through the troubles of finding a liver and then even bothered to ask the insurance for permission? The staff were never interested in saving the girls life because they wanted to make sure they were first going to get payed for it. Then they would have performed surgery that could have possibly saved her life.

You are not certain that the girl would have stayed as a vegetable for the remained of her life.

Yes, I am certain she would have remained in a persistent vegetative state, that's why it's called a "persistent" state, because you don't just snap out of it, especially after two weeks of being in one. As said before, a liver transplant was not "life saving," but "life prolonging," there's a huge and important difference between the two. If this really was a life saving procedure, and a liver was available, the transplant would have occurred without even consulting the insurance company. However, since this treatment had no chance of saving her life, but was merely a stall tactic in order to keep her alive while in a coma, the insurance company was brought into the mix. The insurance company had no problem approving her previous cancer treatments, as well as the failed bone marrow transplant. Those were both potentially life saving, in strong contrast to a liver transplant.

And no, this "utilitarian" view of medicine is not unique to the US.

It is very sad that she caught the leukemias.

It is very terrible that we live in a world seemingly dominated by massive insurance companies with corporate agendas.

It is also quite sad that people allow their heart strings to be pulled by sensationalist media coverage that does not prefer to report all of the relevant facts right away.

Does the US healthcare system need major reforms and changes so that we can at least ensure good general health for the populace of what is supposed to be the most powerful nation in the world? Most certainly. Perhaps we could start by re-locating some of that $0.40 per American tax dollar that goes to fighting worthless foreign wars and invest it in things like education and healthcare. Or maybe we should just start taxing churches more, that'd probably equalize the national debt.

Is it Cigma's fault this girl died of leukemia though? No. It's very sad that it happened and it's very sad that her family is so grieved that they are seeking legal vengeance, but nothing of this case will bring their daughter back, nor could it ever change the state of healthcare to the point of being agreeably adequate. Something needs to change at a national and a corporate level - this is just hysterical fearmongering and it seems to be working on people.

You mentioned that it is somehow especially bad because it happened around Christmas.

The relative irony of it is that the holiday is meant to comemmorate the arbitrary date set for the birth of the supposed Son of God [in actuality, Christmas is in December so as to foreshadow previously established pagan holidays] - but if there in fact was a Son of God - a saviour - then there would be a God in the first place, no? If there is indeed a God worth worshipping, why does it allow beautiful 17 year-old girls to die from leukemia?

Jesus was too busy with his birthday plans to give a , obviously.

Obviously because she wasn't Christian, look at the name and the unibrow.
