Has there ever been a good giant monster movie? I mean one that really hits the mark?
Godzillas/Japanese monster movies are fun because they are so laughable. The love story theme in King Kong detracted from any terror evoked by a giant creature. Is there anything that you guys know about and could reccomend? I'm a big nerd for monster movies. I would really like to see a giant monster movie that just makes you go "Holy ." and mean it. Hopefully Cloverfield will be able to deliver something close to that.

They really are laughable, I always love seeing toy tanks and APC's blown up with little firecrackers. It's always so much more creative than CGI, though. :(

I was a big fan of Gamera. You have to give it up for imagining a giant turtle that can displace his rear legs with afterburners. And then to be able to take that concept and execute it on the screen is pretty spectacular. :p

CGI movies nowadays just aren't the same as those older ones from the 80s. robotics, puppetry, and other live props were the best.
remember Aliens?

YES. That is exactly what I wish would come back, that type of CGI. Everything now is so....glossy and fake. Aliens was such a great classic.

Have you actually watched the original Godzilla? Not the ty engligh dubbed one, but the original Japanese one. It's actually a ing excellent movie, and not so much about the monster, but more about what Japan was going through as a country at the time. And yeah, the american version added a few characters, dubbed it terribly, and completely took away the actual heart of the movie in loo of a crazy monster movie.
 indeed

edit,
that's one of the things i hated the most about war of the worlds (new)...it was just one big ing computerized movie. blah.
also, ps, Jurrasic Park i think was the last movie i remember seeing with "live" robotics/puppets.
if JP came out now, it would really suck

I liked The Host
I wouldn't doubt that Cloverfield took some inspiration from this
