New Beatport Minimum Quarterly Revenue Requirements (pg. 2)

well my problem has always been i never given full attention to production. i always thought once i graduated college i'd get a nice job that would provide significant cash flow and i could buy all this eq and programs and rock out in the studio after work.

instead more than half my income goes to my college loans and i don't want anything more than to just sit down and clear my head with mindless television and browsing TA after work, eat some dinner and hit the sack (thank god for weekends or i'd kill myself by now).

that being said, my whole hobby of club DJing is based on the simple tool or socializing and networking myself with people on the inside of the industry. i may never be a big deal, or popular, and hell i know people that hate me on this website alone based on the pompous jerkoff that i come off as. nevertheless i'll always have access to fresh hot tracks to throw down. and that alone will keep me afloat until i give up this little hobby of mine and dedicate my time fully to theatre (as i should), or put "pen to paper" and throw down some of these great ideas swirling in my head.

only time will tell.

Well even if they do have access to them 90 percent they are not by the correct means.

Hence why I put it in quotes. :)

Honestly I thought I was the only one who ever noticed this. If I have to scroll past another one of his ty ass tracks that he releases every fricken week I was going to put a hit out on him. Honestly he must release three tracks a week of complete garbage. He should take his time, maybe release one every month and maybe come up with something good. Ohh and also redesign his retarded looking logo, looks like something a red headed step child would make.

LOL, careful Matthias! I have a remix coming out on his label that I did for fun, hahahaha. He does come out with a few good tracks every now and then. I definitely agree to what you say though, his label is like a factory pumping out choons every day.

I like this idea.

I am, however, still miffed about territory restrictions.

It could also encourage labels to pump out more garbage, though, to increase their overall sales and hit their quota, which would not be good at all.

See: Christian Padararu

Territory restrictions are about as annoying as DRM (take that, iTunes! ziiing)

I don't care if it were the only place in the world willing to publish a track of mine, Paduraru's label is so full of utter and drivel that I wouldn't even want my name associated with it.

The best tracks are found in promotional form some 4-6 months before they're actually released.

beatport is only useful when i really need a track that i heard the night before at the club and i came up to the DJ and was like "whoa dude, that track was hot, what was it." and he names a random artist and song name, which i enter into my "notes" on my cellular phone. then hungover next saturday or sunday i go to beatport and scroll through my notes and try to find it. then they usually don't have it and i have to go back to my online record pools and dig for it.

/rant.

Beatport really has the EDM industry by the ballsack. I mean, they are the widely recognized leader in digital sales. As far as I know, their competitors aren't even coming close. As a label, you don't really want to even bother being anywhere else. The consumers aren't going to waste time shopping around 5 different stores when they know EVERY label is going to be in one place. So really, all the money in this industry is being lead one way or another to this online giant, and pretty soon you will see their market share quickly approach monopoly levels.

So, going back to the original topic, are the new sales requirements going to hurt or help the dance music industry? Are we going to see more and more labels become exclusive to Beatport so that they can avert the fear of being thrown off the store? Personally if you ask me, the $300 a quarter sounds pretty fair. If your label isn't generating $300 every 3 months, or $100 a month, then maybe you're not worth clogging up the new releases pages.

Just a thought :)

I made a song where I had a straight 4 on the floor kick pattern...with a sample of me burping that came on every 4th measure fills... and every time the burp occurred, you'd hear a sample of me saying "house music". It was pretty fresh and his label was going to sign it...but then I backed out because I've gone a new direction with sampling gaseous emissions... it's really progressive according to some people.

In regards to beatport...I had a chance to meet one of their head honchos at my bday party of all places...and he was telling me that they're pretty dismayed with labels and label owners who think beatport is their marketing tool. People need to promote their own and not rely on the beatport name to effectively sell their product. I think this measure is one more step towards that goal. With very little overhead as a digital label... people just create it to get their own tunes out..and that's just saturating the market with nonsense. A business owner should always have a long term business plan.

If a record label can't net $300 in 3 months it probably deserves to fall off the map.

Of course, I have no idea what relatively successful labels are selling right now - but I'll tell you this much, if I have to spend 5 fewer minutes a week listening to the new generic tech/deep/prog house record du jour, I'll be happy.
