I think it will or has, especially in the world of media, etc. It has potential, but I'm not sure if I would be into it. It wouldn't be relevant and just not of that much interest to use it myself. However, to other people it could be very useful.

All the same, be careful what you post on the internet, like everything else.. take the below as an example..

I saw this article on a 'Twitter incident' not long ago:

quote:

11 Feb - National Post reporter has total Twitter melt down

Breaking Media Analysis - Twitter Fight! @sirdavid vs @aprildunford

National Post technology reporter David George-Cosh let loose on a marketing consultant from Toronto today. Apparently feeling snubbed April Dunford, an experienced marketing professional hadn’t called him back on time for a story he was working on; he took exception to her annoyed Tweet after their phone call:

At just about 1:00 pm EST, April Dunford tweets: “Reporter to me “When the media calls you, you jump, OK!?” Why, when you called me and I’m not selling? Newspapers will get what they deserve”

And that Tweet - note she never “outed” the reporter; simply expressed her frustration. This is what she set off:

sirdavid: @aprildunford what the . I called you for comment two days ago. What did you expect when you called me back? Don’t post that online

sirdavid: @aprildunford furthermore, I called you several times in the afternoon. Don’t be condescending to me when I actually wanted to talk to you

sirdavid: @aprildunford how about you stop blasting personal conversations on twitter and call me back. what the hell is wrong with you.

aprildunford: @sirdavid All I did was return your call. I didn’t expect you to do anything. Wow. Like, seriously, calm down.

sirdavid: @aprildunford & then repost everything? & then hang up on me & don’t call back? I’ve recorded everything. U don’t look as nice as u put on

aprildunford: @sirdavid Dude - I never said who you were. Twitter meet David. David is having a bad day. David, meet Twitter.

sirdavid: @aprildunford hey april - you. seriously. you.

sirdavid: @aprildunford if u can’t handle any heat from what u post and immediate hang up, u. u know my number. u call if you want to settle.

aprildunford: @sirdavid Re-read what you have just Twittered. Then re-read what I Twittered. Deep breaths David. Calm.

I’ve had my fair share of uncomfortable talks with reporters. But, I’ve never quite seen anything like this. I think Ms. Dunford played her hand very well. Her tweets are reasonable and thought out. Mr. George-Cosh’s tweets…well: What do you make of it? Let me know in the comments?

Perhaps this had something to do with this tweet posted moments before he let loose on Ms. Dunford: “Well, it sounds like the cat is out of the bag - I’m quitting the National Post for a job at a newspaper in Abu Dhabi. More in a blog post.

Also, someone who posted in the comments section of that article above has created a 'Friday Fights' Twitter feature on his blog. This is where he, the blogger, has found Twitter fights between celebrities and posted them. It's catty nonsense, sure, but I have to admit I got a bit of guilty pleasure out of reading the Twitter fight between Ashton and Perez Hilton, and Lily Allen and Perez Hilton. It's like reading a US Weekly rag, SMS style.

I think it's safe to say that Twitter is catching on. :)

I still won't touch twitter myself, but I read a write-up recently that makes a lot of good points about Twitter potentially having a huge effect on the search experience, maybe even more so than Google:

Google: Next Victim of Creative Destruction? (Warning - long read, not suitable for retards)

To summarize for the attention-impaired:

Every tweet, no matter how trite, has two very important facets to it: time and context. These aren't present in web pages, except maybe for news articles which are written by a small group and may or may not be truly up-to-date.

This lets you do something called context accumulation, which can't be done with simple web-crawling. Doing any kind of context analysis, like searching for trends, is impossible to do in real time with billions or trillions of large static web pages. A twitter post is very small (usually making just one specific statement) and also refers to a specific instant in time, which makes it possible to save some "context" (trend statistics, associations, whatever) and then only have to process the new information in real-time, or hourly/daily/whatever.

It's the same way our own brains work. We form opinions, feelings, summaries of the things we learn and hear, and find ways to integrate new information into those, as opposed to cycling through every single sentence we've ever read when we need to apply or regurgitate the information.

Do this right, and you can tap into a kind of collective hive mind. Gather market research or find out about a major event or disaster not within days or weeks but within minutes or even seconds of it happening. The implications are enormous and even a little eerie.

Problem is we don't quite have the technology or algorithms to do this kind of thing yet. The article was a bit of an opinion piece written by someone who is presumably working in that area. Nevertheless, it's convinced me not to ignore Twitter anymore.

In a giant sea of trifles, the ripples and waves may still hold meaningful information if you can recognize them.

I have graciously aquired the art or not creating new threads :P

I was trying to get with the program, but the program doesn't work like it's supposed to in Canada

Facebook is as far as I will ever go with this social networking crap. It's all gone way too far and I know a lot of people who are starting to think negatively about putting so much information about your life on display on the internet. I've scaled my facebook profile back to quite an extent. Half the people on my facebook I either don't actually really know or I can't ing stand. Do I really want some loser from high school knowing what I'm up to?

I also cannot understand the people who actively use these sites for relationships. All the constant status updates, emails, wall posts, tagging, blah blah blah...sometimes I come very close to just deleting everything. I'm not sure how people can spend so much time on there every day.

Young people are even worse. I'm seeing a girl right now who's five years my junior and I swear she'd rather communicate over texts and facebook posts/messages as opposed to the telephone or just waiting until the next time we see each other in person (constant texting, etc). I don't intend on changing my more direct style, but I guess not keeping up with technology and these type of sites will have its drawbacks.

Technology is there to your advantage and to your disadvantage.

If you think Twitter and Facebook are the same thing (just another social network idea), you have no idea:

http://twestival.com/

In Toronto alone we raised over 10K that night, it's a very interactive community and the experience has been nothing but great.

Go anywhere in the world, ask for a restaurant suggestion and within 10 minutes you'll get feedback and suggestions.

that said, if all you do is casual status updates, then you haven't tapped into the power of Twitter, for people like me who use it as a micro-blogging tool to network with peers and promote yourself to your potential clients it's great, there's as lot of spammers out there too, but that's normal and it's way more addictive than FB.

Starbucks, Kodak, David Miller, David Lynch, James Zabiela and many many more, it's as diverse as it can possibly be.

The power of Twitter was witnessed in Barak Obama's campaign and this is where it's going:

No, I did not notice that the article I referred to as a blatant opinion piece with a point-blank disclosure at the end was written by somebody associated with Twitter. Sigh.

That doesn't make the content any less important or interesting. I'm not convinced that it's going to eat away at Google, but the fact remains that there are all sorts of things you can do with Twitter that would never work in the context of bog-standard web search.

I find it silly to have facebook, twitter AND myspace when you have the same people on all 3 and update your status at the same time to say the same thing on all 3. Really? Take a break and walk away. No one misses you or cares that much.

I still find it silly when people update their status umpteen times a day to let everyone know what they're doing every hour on the hour.

yup. I actually started CALLING friends again not that long ago instead of sending them an IM or texting them...and forgot how much more connected u feel after having a REAL conversation with someone. How much nicer it is to hear their voice on the other end of the telephone. When people text me, i usually phone them back instead of texting back. I never understood why people start a conversation via text messaging, that can be discussed verbally over the phone in WAY less time. People have become so cold, and disconnected from reality already because of technology, and this just shows that's it's only going to get worse from here. Sad really...

I really don't get this great desire to broadcast their lives that people seem to have.
