So, what do you think about the Stephenville UFO sighting? (pg. 4)

Right now I'm not even sure there's intelligent life in this thread, let alone the universe.

But we haven't yet proved that it is impossible.

You're talking about traveling faster than light? We actually have proven that.

But let's not make a mistake and assume that the same minerals, metals and energy resources that make up the Earth also make up every single world. It's possible that other sentients have access to greater metals and forms of energy found only on their world, and have used it to master space travel.

What an enormously stupid statement.

Well I wouldn't call it silly. Unlikely perhaps, but not silly. Here, take the Mars mission for example. There doesn't seem to be any reason for us to explore our closest neighbor, but science and curiosity has propelled us to send rovers on the planet to collect data for us. Even if there isn't any sign of life on the planet, we explore it anyway, just to see if there may be anything of remote interest to us. So it's possible the aliens are thinking in the same way. Maybe they want to study more about pineapples or communicate with humpback whales (Star Trek reference), either way we shouldn't deny that our planet may hold something of some interest to someone else out in space.

The bad thing is: nothing on our planet sends information into space with enough energy. The only thing that can possibly seen is the sun. So if Ceiling Alien points it's telescope towards your house to watch you masturbate the only thing it will see is white cosmic noise. And apart from that, the pic of you masturbating travels only at the speed of light. So Ceiling Alien would only receive it after about 1000 years.

And considering we have no complete understanding of the universe (G.Relativity + Quantum), I don't think that gives us any ground as to what is possible.

Right. So unless you have a complete understanding of mathematics please refrain from saying that 1 + 1 = 2, or using Pythagoras theorem. The fact that we don't know everything doesn't mean that everything we know might be wrong.

we're not even 100% sure how gravity works

Thank you for this relevant and insightful contribution.

Not to jump into the middle of a debate or anything here, but...

Just how the hell would you know? I mean I'm not saying that either of you are right or wrong, but I think it's pretty ignorant to write-off something like that. I mean for s sake, we're barely able to see off into the universe, so who's to say that he's wrong for saying that? How can we know for sure unless we've actually been there? What makes his statement "enormously stupid"?

Post me a source and I'll consider it.

And what an enormously stupid response. So apparently, not only are you a physics whiz, but you know for a fact that no other minerals or elements outside our own periodic table can exist. Please.

And using your own logic, they must know we exist, because we've been on this Earth for more than a thousand years. If they were to point their telescope at us at this very moment, they would probably be witnessing the Crusades right now.

As if yours was any better...

id also like to add that other areas of the universe would be subject to exactly the same laws as our own. there isn't some part in middle space where laws suddenly change (unless you think there are aliens living in black holes), that would be retarded and against everything we currently "know" about the universe.

as i understand it, einstein's theory of general relativity says that faster than light travel is impossible? feel free to prove me wrong, my understanding of most of this is pretty ordinary!

It's special relativity, but otherwise you're right. The speed of light is a cosmic constant, it is just not possible to reach an equal or higher velocity.

If you had any idea what you're talking about then you wouldn't mention metals and minerals but subatomic particles, or at least atoms and nucleons. I will not embark into a stupid discussion of weird new elements, different laws of nature or any other fantastic speculations. There's not a single fact that would make any intelligent person believe such things. The only point of these theories is to move the whole subject to a place where it can't be refuted by science or common sense. Religion has done the same thing for centuries. Of course you can believe whatever you want, even if it has nothing to do with the reality of our universe.

I wish people would just use Occam's razor and some common sense once in a while.

Just to mention something into the discussion which you forget.

Before Einstein there were other scientists who had different theories about physics, universe, stars and so on. Einstein proved them wrong but he didn't prove he was 100% right. If someone in the future manages to prove Einstein wrong about his theories? Then what? We are waaaaaay too small in the universe to be able to make conclusions about ANYTHING regarding universe structure.

And something else I was thinking about. Imagine we land on Europa (one of Jupiter's satellites which is supposed to have frozen water). And if we discover there that beneath the ice there is life? Underwater life? I mean, we don't even know all about our ocean life. Just think what might be lying beneath Europa's ice...

Just some thoughts.

thus far einstein's theories have stood up to EVERY SINGLE challenge we have been able to throw at it. its a proven as a scientific theory can be. his theories even predicted black holes well before they were discovered.

im gonna side with einstein for the time being ;)

Alright mother******s, if you're so smart then explain this.
