haha so true. Luckily I picked a tenured one that was willing to work on any topic. All the ones going for tenure want you to do stuff to help them get tenure....so you get a narrow topic, or you just have to work on your own (which isn't all bad)

True! But it's not fair to promise PhD students a topic of their choice while signing up and then pushing them into doing something else.

I'm not new to the business of publishing. I already have journal and conference publications from my master's research. :D

Many people I know find the phd to be little to no use for everyday life and more stress. If you're into it, then go for it, but in this case I think the guys made the right choice, even if it is back to the oppressive life of india :p Heat, sand and MS Dhoni :p

LOL. True. I would still love to do a PhD. I need an interesting topic and a good advisor. But I'm already 26. Time to start working and pay off my debts. Besides, I haven't gone back for good. For all ya know, I may choose to take away another Brit's job. :p

Curious as to how that reacted with your stomach. I mean, if I went to India and started chowing wicked Indian food, I would most likely end up....rather uncomfortable for a while. You've been in the States for how long? Does it mess with your stomach like it would mine? Or are you automatically 'used to it'?

I will get used to living here within a few weeks. That's because I've lived a significant portion of my life in this environment. But you will probably fall sick. Mainly upset stomach and such. For now, I'm sticking to dishes that can be cooked at home. Quality control is assured at home, but not outside. I am already beginning to feel the difference in the quality of life here. The pollution is irritating. The ambiance in general is noisier, more dusty and significantly warm. Too much traffic and too much crowd :p I've lived here for more than 22 years. Funny how one quickly adapt to different environments within a relatively short span of 3-4 years.

This might be an odd question...

Where would you prefer to live? I mean, you grew up in India, then had a decent portion of your life in a highly 'Westernised' (for use of a better word) situation. Do you miss the US, or are you far more happy back home now? Are you having a culture shock thing happening right now?

It took me about 2 months to settle myself once I stopped traveling, so I'm always interested in this one :)
