Reason #4434990549035435 why I will never even think of traveling to a country whose law is formed entirely around absurd and ancient religious dogma.

What a load of horse .

:(

Looks like I'll never be traveling to the middle east or southeast Asia.

I do agree, although one could potentially play Devil's Advocate and argue that if you're going to another country, you'd better know what their drug laws are--and if they're archaic, you'd better remember to clear the weed out of your pockets before you go.

Still, I'm not trying to undermine the absurdity of this situation. Deportation would have done just fine. And what the hell is the UK doing about this?

What's REALLY ed up is the UK citizen who got sentenced to 4 years for having 0.003% of a gram of Cannabis on the bottom of his shoe (that's less than a grain of sugar). If there were ever an excuse for a government to go ape and trigger happy like ours likes to do, it would be over the detention and imprisonment of one of its citizens because they stepped on a joint somewhere on their way to the airport.

Oh yeah - I totally agree that if you're going to travel, you better know the risks you're taking before you go, so as far as I'm concerned Grooverider is getting what he asked for insofar as he was clearly either completely ignorant of the risk he was taking or a complete idiot.

Beyond that, however, these are countries with really, really ed up legal systems to begin with - but I cannot believe the west don't stand up more often for its citizens who clearly get caught by really ed up circumstance (I also forget how that issue with the teacher from Australia being charged with smuggling went).

Apparently it was a spliff he left in the back pocket of some pants ages prior.

Dubai.

the first time i went (last april) security was not scary at all

now im going again next week and pretty worried..i dont even do drugs, im seriously just worried about something getting on my shoes!

strange thing is you dont usually get screened in the country you are going to, only the one you are coming from, unless thats changed in dubai now. grooverider would have had to have brought the drugs in with him already or picked it up while in dubai.

Wow... this is madness.
I've always been so fascinated by Dubai... kinda tainted now.

Having said that, if anyone would like to take me to the Burj Al-Arab for a night - I will accept with pleasure :toocool: lol
