I'm not defending the fact people with poppy seeds being jailed or weed on their shoes but Grooverider had it coming and the sentence he received was only to be expected.

Not being a full fledged expert on drug possession laws I may have stepped over the line in comparing the laws; but the fact is you cannot expect the same levels of tolerance to drugs from a country which has just recently taken the path of modernity and liberalism.

well i know i did read a thing that grooverider did say he left a usable amount in his jeans. so im not against him being punished for that. although i do see the leght of the sentence as extreme, thats their law. so no disputes there with his situation specifically.

and im no expert on the laws either, but it is a fact that law enforcement in most everywhere else will exercise discretion with the exeption of china, cause well..its china.

Well dubai has a mix of laws, both secular and non-secular. I will never visit a place that practices Sharia. Freedom is a joke in sharia, actually, it isn't. While there are minimum sentences local judges have the power to do whatever you want. I think flogging is allowed.

core version: Dubai has a mixed of religious and non-religious laws.

You're getting the concepts of customs and security mixed up.

Security is screening to make sure you don't take anything that you aren't permitted to carry onboard an aircraft, This is dependent on the authorities in the country in which you board an aircraft. In some parts of New Zealand you can travel commercially without passing through security.

Customs is the regulation of goods permitted into a country you arrive into, hence the decleration form when you travel back to the US. Secondary screening only comes about if something suspicious is flagged up.

Needless to say I'm travelling to Dubai for the first time in a few months and am immensely looking forward to it. Those of you who say you refuse to travel to countries with laws and customs that don't fit with your world view are missing out on seeing a completely different culture and country in action. Your loss. I've lived in the US for a few years now and find SO many of the people I know in and out of work are complete chicken s! I'm taking a few months off work in early Summer to travel the world with my wife and pretty much everyone's reaction here in the US is along the lines of 'you're so brave' or 'aren't you scared?' FFS! Staying insulated within one culture and not leaving the country is part of the downfall of modern society and understanding in the US. You'd be surprised about the number of countries that have travel advisories against the US because of bigotry, racism and the like!

I think it is far too easy to say that our culture is right and everyone else is wrong and try and place our cultural standpoint on foreign countries and areas that we shouldn't. We (the royal 'we') need to accept that other cultures with different rules and customs aren't wrong. They are just different.

Actually i know quite alot about their culture. More then i would like to explain. Scared? ha! I planning a trip to go to the on amazon . I think that scarier then going to Dubai. The UAE is one of the safest arab nations to go too. I do not agree with a country ran by Sharia, never did i say it was wrong. If i went down there i understand i would be bound by those laws. My issue that would prevent me from going is not that it is wrong; it is that do not COMPLETELY understand Islamic law. While i have a good grasp of it, i will not go to place where i'm less then 100% of the REGION interpretation of Shiara. Each region of the UAE can interpret Sharia however they want. What is tolerable in one region, may not be in another.

People there are accustomed to living under that type of law. I do not consider a "loss" or "fun" of having my freedoms greatly reduced. There are many other cultures that are just (or more) fascinating then to go one of those countries. Of course i understand that you might think that Dubai 1000x more interesting then the Amazon. That is 100% ok as well.

Orbital thanks for your post, although my 'scared Americans' reference obviously wasn't directed at someone who would consider going to the Amazon! Sounds pretty interesting to me, ready to take on some Amazonian pirates?:thepirate As for Dubai, it is somewhere that has interested me quite a bit. One of my uncles raves about the place and has bought up some property on 'The World' and I'm interested to see what the place is about....Unfortunately Bananal Island isn't included as a stopover in my round the world!

There are a few oddballs like me at work but for the most part these are the types of people who seem scared to do anything beyond going to the Outer Banks with their families for a week.... Sometimes it'd do people good to get out of the country and go somewhere outside their comfort zone.
