2. Isn't that what progessive is all about : repetition.
And for others who said we should try mixing progessive, how are we suppose to make a good set of a music genre that we do not really like? its like asking a rap dj to play rock. :stongue: |
people who dont like progressive usully dont know and havent experianced it .... you think you know progressive but i garentee you dont and havent really experianced it yet.... and saying progressive is about being repeative ...then you obviously dont know what progressive is.... progressive is far for repeative ....but for people who need little melodies to like something then i guess it is lol.... progressive like i said isnt about melodies and synths its about the beat and bassline...id advise you to get a real progressive cd or download one and if you have a great car system just blast the cd and dont fast foward play it form the begining to end ... i bet you wont think its that bad afterall...ill promise you that you just have to play the cd from front to back..thats also a difference between most trance and progressive ...progressive the set has to be heard from start to finish really to enjoy what the dj tried to create....where as trance u can listen to the tracks and skip forward ..cuz trance djs play more to the song ..rather then the set..where as progressive djs play the set meaning they program it to create a vibe with the set... i mean progressive djs wont play there favorite songs one after another cuz most likely the programming would suck..... im not saying trance doesnt have good programming but progressive the programming of sets is usually more thought out ,,, they will have peak tracks which they will build to them ..meaning they will programming other tracks to lead up to that peak track so when that peak track hits the crowd is in AHHH more so then if he just dropped it whenever in the set.... Sasha is a great example of that ...he will play the crowd just giving them enough to enjoy then he just builds it up to the point where the crowd is going insane...... like i siad get your self a progressive cd ..and have no exectations and dont listen to it as if it were trance with melodies ... listen to it loud so you can really hear the bassline ... thats how i got most of my friends liking progressive ..and i bet youll like it more as well ..just give it a try ...:) |

"Parks & Wilson - Painting on Silence"... (this is very deep and dark but if you listen to this and just blast it in your car youll be amazed how amazing this cd ..but its kinda slow which for the new listeners might not be the best ..but one of my favorite cds...
"Digweed GU19 los Angelas" Great cd1 is great...
"Sander Kleinenberg Nubreed" Disk 1 is great
some recent cds i heard that werent bad
Dave Seaman new GU22 melbourne
and John Digweed - MM2 ..both cd were pretty good ..digweed cd is very new sounding ...and very mood setting but i grew to like it ....progressive cds are also cds that youll grow to like more and more u listen to them .. |

Just beats & basslines would be boring & would have no contrast between high pitch synths & strings vs. lower pitch bass drums & basslines. It would be like building a foundation of a house without building the actual house.
Imagine Rock & Roll or country w/o guitar played with just the beat & bassline. It would be just as boring. I prefer tunes with a complete feel, full & well rounded, not just beats & bass.
However, I can see how hardcore dance fans would love the core elements of dance music (beats & bass), it's just not my thing. |

i didnt say just beats and basslines i said its about the beats and bassline ..thats the vocal point of progressive ..where as in trance its the synths... techno is all about the beat....most of house is all about the beat ....most genres are about the beat ..... many people dont seem to think they are boring |

| quote: | | i think that progressive is just a hard gender to understand and hard to enjoy for most people. people want good fast beats, with nice sounds without any repetition but for those who know progressive, we know that progressive is just so much better |
I know what you guys are talking about. I've actually played with progressive records, and they do a have a different bass/beat to it. I think it requires more patience to spin because we're use to faster songs. But I also think it's easier to mix thoroughly than trance because the beats dont drift as much/fast as they do @ higher bpms. I have a easier time mixing Progressive, Progressive House, Hard House, and Funky House over Trance although Trance is seeming easier too after practice :haha:
Personally I dont really like listening to Progressive that much. Sasha and Digweed are great DJs, but the music itself is boring for me. ur right that ppl have to listen to the whole set from start to finish... and after listening to some sasha sets, i dont feel the same energy. I can feel the beats, I can feel the basslines... but it just doesnt give me the same feeling Trance does. It gives me a more mellow feel which probably is what the set was suppose to make me feel I guess. And that's simply because progressive doesnt change as much as Trance does.
anyways i'm the sorta person that tries to cope with different genres. so i wouldnt mind doing a prog set for someone. i just need to try out drum N bass and i've done almost every main genre out there i think. :gsmile: |

| This has thrown up the same old prog vs trance arguments. But at the end of the day it just goes to show that prog and trance lovers are so much more into their music than any other genre and you have to respect people for that. I enjoy listening to prog, Parks and Wilson converted me when the played in Glasgow almost a year ago, but I still prefer trance simply because of the energy it creates. And respect to Digweed and Sasha who are consintently brilliant at mixing. If more trance DJ's tried to mimic them when it was possible then we wouldn't even be having this argument! |
