Because the last time I did that I wasted 8$ on Transformers.
I'm not really sure why I have to justify not wanting to see a movie that I probably won't like any further than this. I'll see it when it comes out on DVD and thats that. :haha:

Sorry bro - but the bulk of the New Yorker comes off to me as nothing more than high minded bull with absolutely no substance to it what-so-ever. It's just bizarro Fox News. |
As for this, you may get that impression, and I do too at time when reading certain pieces, but I really enjoy the majority of the reporting in the New Yorker, it's in my opinion some of the best I can find, on a very wide range of subjects. The review section is where most of this pretentious air emanates from but the rest of the magazine is in my opinion pretty valuable. |

So every movie that gets a bad review in the New Yorker is a bad movie because of that one experience?
:haha: |

| 8 dollars is nothing anyways. |

Did I say that? No. I'm not sure what is so difficult to understand here. I read a review which highlights pretty much everything I would take issue with in such a movie, a movie I already very much doubt will interest me from what I have seen so far (along with the fact that I'm obviously not knowledgeable and much interested in the original comic), and so given all of this information, I've decided not to go see it in a theater, because, if I do make it to the movies in the next few weeks, I'm sure there will be something else I'd rather spend my money on and see on the big screen.
Really, is it that hard to get where I'm coming from? :stongue: |

that review is bull, i could smell pretentiousness from here in santiago.
Three things:
1 - He does makes a point on how the he built the suit in the cave, but , is a comic book movie, that i can let pass.
2 - The fact that he says that the extremists are not identified gives away the fact that he has never ever read an ironman comic at all. In fact, his description of the character sounds like something on wiki. For gods sake, the group was called "Ten Rings" how more obvious can you get. And if you say well, this is a movie, it should be understandable for non comic book fans, everybody knows they are setting up a sequel, so there are things you wont understand from the beggining.
3 - | quote: | | The contest between the two begins to amount to something, but then they disappear into their armor and battle like two oversized beetles. |
its a movie.. about a man.. who creates an armor suit... what did you expect? some grappling and a gogoplata? gimme a break |

Meh, the guest columns are generally the only ones I've ever found worth reading - and even then it's only because they have the clout of being "the New Yorker" that they're able to land reasonably intelligent members of academia to contribute. I will concede, however, that in general, the political editorials they have are pretty sound.
I just think going to the New Yorker for a review of almost any movie, piece of music, book, etc. that isn't part of their vision of "high culture" is much like reading Thrasher for a review of the London Philharmonic. |

Well then it's kinda dumb of you to come in here and say anything at all.

I guess, but they do review rather popular movies and those sometimes pass with flying colors, usually the ones that have that kind of cross appeal. It all depends on the reviewer too, Denby is just particularly scathing, but sometimes I'm in the mood for that. :p Especially when I want an extra reason not to see something I've already made my mind up not to see. :o
I generally only read reviews of stuff thats particularly relevant to myself or my interests (which is usually very little in that section).
Also, Hendrik Hertzberg makes any New Yorker with anything by him worth reading. |

Same thing happened in the transformers thread so I'm not surprised. It is really funny to see people continuously try and sell a movie to me long after I've already made my mind as if they work for Paramount or something... |

Poor form, Clovis. :p

Much like Kuhn, Hertzberg more often than not gets by because his writing style is as flamboyant as it is, not because the content he writes is particularly meaningful.
Not saying they both aren't terribly fun to read, but there are times when I look at them and say to myself "Are you ing kidding me? :stongue: " |
