First of all, I think that the older generation gays are "in your face" because to them, it was/is a civil and human rights issue. They were the kids getting the beat out of them and their lives threatened because they were gay. They were the ones that coined "we're here, we're queer..." and all that, and I think they have every right to how they feel about the way theyve been treated in this country. As far as the younger gays go, from what I can tell (and my gay best friend and I have had a lot of conversations about this), they act a certain way because they feel like they have to. The only role models they have are the "in your face" gays. But I think it's getting "better" (quotes because I dont necessarily believe its a problem in the first place). My gay is a lot like Jake, I think. No one ever knows hes gay until he comes out and says it for himself, or if they see him with his boyfriend. Most people immediately assume that we're a happy couple. He's by far the straightest gay boy I know.
Those are my 2 cents. |

I have a gay flatmate from China. He's a really really nice guy and isn't 'gay-ish' on the outside till he gets drunk.
Then, he makes me realise why I'm homophobic. |

-ban on preventing blood donations

-a gay guy will get bashed anywhere that is 10 miles outside of any metropolis
So it's a lot like racism except racism has laws protecting against it fully.
Gay people are oppressed, and more openly so, than black people today. It's not up to par with discrimination against black people 60 years ago, but let's put it this way, if you try to be yourself by kissing a guy like a normal guy would kiss a girl in any random suburb town, you'll get your ass kicked. I mean kicked. |
at least there are some more progressively 'friendly' cities. obviously you're going to have an easier time in san fransisco than you would in des moines, iowa.
still, its disgusting to hear about people being attacked, etc... due to any sort of difference from "normal" society (be it race, gender, or sexual preference).
why can't everyone just say, " it" and get on w/ their lives? :( |

Demographic groups using the same verbal affectations is nothing new. Does a guy talking with a lisp sound any less intelligent than a dude with a thick southern drawl, or an inner city dude with the whole 'ebonics' dialect thing, or a northerner with all thier 'eh's?
The us and indeed the world is full of different dialects; variations on a common theme. Some of them bother me too... but I think it's a little unfair to think it has anything to do with 'speaking like an adult.'
(hell, I can't STAND british accents... but I'm not going to tell the next brit I talk to to "speak like an adult" to me. Different strokes for different folks.) |

Indian descent. Born somewhere else, grew up in India. Incidentally, his parents were from the same state as my grandparents, and he went to boarding school in the same place I went to as well :) |
