relationships/marriage is social construct. we do it because it's normal to do it. same with lots of things if you think about it. women having long hair, men normally short, women wearing skirts and men normally don't. i mean look at the way i've just used the word "normally"... as if it's ABnormal for men to have long hair. and i hate to use normal and abnormal in this way, but i think now the definition of how most of us use normal is just something that's mostly accepted by today's society. or at least western society.

also, continuing my first statement thoughts, i believe human beings aren't naturally monogamous. we kind of just started that not so long ago, if you really think about it. homosapiens have been around how many years? and how many years have we begun to have monogamous relationships? yea. |

Let me be clear in saying that I do NOT approve of people cheating. Cheating can wreak havoc on a persons emotional well-being and is just not cool when two people have made conscious decisions to be faithful. Nor do I promote promiscuity (mostly due to safey concerns). People ought to be SOMEWHAT picky, **especially** if they are taking a risk in possibly ruining their current relationship.
However, I feel as if, speaking to many MANY people, at both work and in personal conversations about human sexuality, it seems as if most human beings are not "made" to be monogamous. Dani hit it right on the head when she said that it has only been a short period in time that humans have remained faithful to one another. Yes, times have changed, and as humans evolve, we distance ourslves from animalistic instincts.....but if you ask around, many MANY people have admitted to cheating at least once, if not many times. Hence my thread and curiosity towards the topic. Is it wrong, is it natural, is it ok? Or is their particular CIRCUMSTANCES that is it wron/ok/natural/etc.....?? |

protip: almost all relationship problems stem from the fact that evolution doesn't work as fast as technology and religion.
also, the women's movement didn't help matters (i'm not misogynistic it's actually men's fault) if anyone wants more details let me know and i'll post some more gems of knowledge :gsmile: |

Well, being as the women's revolution granted women equal power, somewhere along the line men forgot how to be men. In any relationship there needs to be a male (dominant/giving) energy and a female (submissive/receiving) energy. That's the way it's worked for millions of years and as you said earlier evolution hasn't caught up. I don't know if women know this but when guys are deciding to approach a stranger to talk, they feel fear. Women don't have this fear. This is evolutionary as well, but that's another tangent :P
Anyway, society has impressed upon men that it is better to be a "nice guy", charming, etc than to actually use the instincts that they are born with. Thus, these instincts are suppressed. The saying "nice guys finish last?" As much as some people may hate to admit it, its TRUE to the very core of our being. There needs to be a definitive dominant/submissive exchange for a functioning relationship.
About cheating:
Men are more likely in general to cheat with other women to expose his genes to as many times as possible.
Women are much more likely to cheat when they're ovulating. This is to increase the variety of DNA the eggs are exposed to. Men are designed to shun women who cheat. Why would a man want to waste his resources on genes that may not be his. Of course, in today's society there's different options for such eventualities (DNA tests and so forth.)
In caveman times, cheating would not have as many complications. Female partner cheats on male partner with male who is more socially/physically adept, the other male's genes survive (most likely) thus strengthening the human race. |
