So now Toronto's brilliant mayor wants to tear down the Gardiner (pg. 8)

Why not? Its just that toronto doesnt have anything of transport significance as an equivalance. The Gardinar is ALL we have and even it is half done as it is! It was originally supposed to end at the 401 in Pickering!

Toronto should have a toll on the Gardiner, I know people are gonna bitch at me for this, but imagine all the revenues that will be collected to build the future Gardiner and a % of if can go towards the TTC. I'm not too sure how many commuters take the Gardiner but let's just say 100,000 cars. If the toll was $1 that's $200,000/day for 5 days a week so basically 1 million dollars a week that goes towards road maintenance and public transportation (not including weekends). Companies can also pay for a transponder for their employees similar to the ETR.

People will basically have no choice but to take the toll way cause it'll be the fastest route, I can't imagine anyone taking the inner roads to save a couple dollars if you're used to taking the Gardiner. (Similar to Chicago's Skyway Toll, which charges $3)

You dont drive do you?

Didnt think so.

I bet youa re the first to bitch when transit goes up 15 cents ;)

So it looks like the Mayor's desire to make all new homeowner's swimming pools surrounded by a four-walled fence is coming into effect.

So if you're planning to have one in your future house which you planned to have a walkout from your patio door, to the deck and hop in the pool, fuggettaboutit. If you happen to Deadmau5 your career and get that U-shaped mansion around the pool in the back yard, fuggettaboutit too. It will have an ungly fence around it.

Three walled fences are to keep neighbours' kids away. The 4th wall is supposed to keep your own kids away from the pool.

Another stupid Toronto nanny bylaw.

Actually I do drive, and I do take the Gardiner a lot. But yeah if the toll would make sure that there's smooth traffic, more lanes, and go towards a better highway then I'm all up for it. Like I said earlier, you can probably get your company to pay for the toll way kinda like how companies pay for the ETR transponder and travel time. I don't take transit so I don't really know how it would effect me with ticket prices going up but I'll probably bitch too if the price went up and there's no change in service.

I'm just thinking of this idea from a business point of view. Toll ways have worked for Chicago, NY, and I'm sure many other places, which engendered a lot of revenue for the city. Especially now how Toronto is in debt everywhere.

it still wouldn't solve the traffic issues that Toronto already has. The 407 was suppose to help clean up traffic problems along the 401, which it hasn't helped. Instead of one bumper to bumper highway there are two of them during rush hour.

#1) I am my company :)

#2) Most companies wont pay it unless you are in sales. The lowest end workers and those on a fixed salary will suffer the most.

#3) Chicago has alternative free highways for those who wish to avoid the toll.

wrong wrong wrong

407 is wide open 99% of the time during rush hour
401 is busy of course but moves efficiently if you know how to drive it at rush hour.

The 401 would be a disaster without the 407.

A reality check for those comparing Chicago, New York and San francisco infrastructure to Toronto.

San Francisco:

To give perspective, San Jose would be the equivalent of Hamilton and Napa would be Oshawa.

Chicago:

New York:

Toronto:

Tell me again why we are talking about TEARING DOWN a highway instead of building a new one?

BTW, why are the lanes on the Gardiner so retardedly wide? Especially coming up to the Spadina exit. You can fit 2 cars side by side in the middle lane easily. Complete waste of space.
