I ran a search and strangly didnt find a similar post.....so....
I was just interested to see what DAW's we all work with, along with the percentages ;)
Personally i use Ableton nowadays, would love to use Logic, but i cant afford a Mac......yet!
So, what do you use? (If i missed one, ill add it at a later date)......and why?
I initailly went with FL Studio, my first DAW, i will allways love it, especialy for the step sequencer, the piano roll and the built in plug ins. But i moved onto Ableton as i find it easier to put down ideas, and i just love how easy it is to manipulate audio/samples..........it just needs better plugins! |

I use Cubase. I don't particularly like Cubase, I just dislike it the least. Every DAW has it's problems, it is just a matter of finding the most tolerable.
Cubase: user interface
Ableton: too resource heavy
FL: no sidechaining, no auto pdc, crap multicore cpu support
Reaper: laughable vst compatibility
Sonar: horrible workflow and interface
They also all have their merits, of course...
Cubase: best vst compatibility
Ableton: workflow
FL: step sequencer
Reaper: best user interface
Sonar: awesome stock plugins
I started out on FL, but stopped using it when I realised how far behind the competition it had fallen; not having auto PDC or "full" multicore support is an absolute joke. I had a brief run with Reaper, but the vst bugs ruined the experience for me. I eventually settled on Cubase, as it seems to be the most dependable of the bunch. I do not like Cubase's workflow or user interface though. |

..............apart from you need a mac to run it :whip: |

Logic is overrated. It is just like any other DAW. The functional difference between DAWs is virtually nil these days, it's just the small details that make the difference. |

I've used a lot over the years so I've got some arguments too
logic 5.5
+
fantastic internal plugins
very customizable
powerful automation
-
DISCONTINUED FOR WINDOWS
cubase 4
+
extremely powerful midi and audio editing
vst implementation is top
folder tracks (++++)
-
midi controller implementation from the stone age
internal plugins no match for logic
automation not nearly as intuitive as ableton or logic
rewiring plain blows (main reason I ditched it)
not intuitive in general
reason 4
+
nearly everything you'll ever need for sound creation
total freedom of routing
LESS IS SO MUCH MORE (no kiddin ;))
-
note edit in sequencer is really annoying
no audio tracks nor vst so might need rewiring
ableton live
+
great interface and ease of use
BEST REWIRE implementation
GREAT FX
-
needs time to get used to the midi editing
sonar
only tried the demo to find out the rewire implementation is the least of everything I tried so thx but no thx.
Maybe we should make the perfect music tool: for me that would be
reason 4 and logic synths and plugins
ableton live automation and midi controllers implementation
cubase 4 midi arrangment and piano roll (folder tracks for invention of the decade)
logic mixer
logic/ableton bouncing of tracks |

sounds good to me lol.
we can make stuff like synths etc now, so who knows, maybe sometime in the future we will be able to piece together our own DAW...............and then fail miserably at it :p |

| Disagree, you can easily assign ur own key commands for everything you need to do.
Cubase has the best MIDI editor i have ever seen in any DAW, the Piano roll is a bliss to work with. Which is something i cant say about any other DAW. |

you shouldn't have to ;)
keyboard shortcuts are only there to compensate for poor interface design.

reaper has a completely tool-less piano roll and sequencer, which is by far faster and more intuitive (no need to constantly switch between draw and delete tools). trust me, cubase's interface needs a lot of work. look at a screenshot of reaper or logic 8 and you will see how good a DAW interface can be; having a docked mixer is bloody fantastic. |
