yeah but its a couple. even if they got 3 bedroom apt those 2 would be sharing the room (unless they're mormons or something).
to avoid drama they should pay 600$ each and single friend should maybe let them use half of his/hers closet??? |

lol. the only way to do it is equally 3 ways.
why would the person staying alone pay more? that's just silly. you share the other areas equally. kitchen, living room, bathroom.
just because they get their own room doesn't mean they pay more. you choose to live in the same room as boyfriend and actually it's a bonus that you have a boyfriend there. |
I was going to say the couple should pay slightly more, but after reading this, i think split 3 ways is right. 3 people share everything, and im sure they would share a bedroom if it was just them two as well. Split three ways is the right call IMO.
However, if you're having trouble coming to an agreement on price, I would suggest you not move in together. |

I'd say just split everything as 1/3rd.
The only way I'd say that the couple should pay less, is /if/ they were "friends and having to share a room" (ie: two beds in 1 room, not sleeping together).
The fact that they are a 'couple', even if it was just the two of them living there - they would be sharing that room anyways. |

Hmm... That is a tough one.
The utilities should be split 3 ways as you will all be using those equally.
I would then divide the rent in half... this would represent bedroom space vs. common living space. This will give you 2 fees.
The common space should be split 3 ways.... $750/3 = $250.
Then the bedroom space would be split in 2 - 50% for each bedroom.
So rent would be as follows....
$625 - person who is alone in bedroom
$437.50/person for the 2 sharing.
I don't think it should be an even 50/50 split because she is not getting an entire 50% of the apartment to herself only a bedroom.
That's my 2 cents... it does equal out to about 60/40. (just the long way to get there) |
Yup. Exactly what I would do! Sorry lol
Split the rent based on square footage of the bedrooms, ie. 50/50. Since it is a two bedroom, they are choosing to live in the same amount of space.
Then split the utilities and extras three ways.
That is the most fair thing to do and makes the most sense.

Best answer ^
Bedrooms don't determine the cost of rent. All common space needs to be considered..
50/50 does not make sense when you share the living room, kitchen and bathroom with 2 other people. |

I am glad I changed someone's mind.
I have lived in these situations before and it always has been that if you share a living space you pay exactly equally.
An apartment isn't a set of individual rooms. It's a full living space that you split evenly.
Applying complicated mathematical equations to it is just silly.
I would rather avoid the resentment the person who is paying more will feel always towards the situation. |

| Equal 3 ways. Did you all agree to move there together in the first place? If you did....definitely split equally 3 ways. It would be rather sleezy to get there and than say you are entitled to pay less because you are sharing a room. If the 3 of you all went together than it definitely has to be split equally. The whole argument of "we are a couple and we share a bed so therefore we should pay less" is quite ridiculous. It's like you're attempting to financially penalize your best friend for not having a boyfriend. |

LOL this is funny...
I would split the kitchen, living room and bath for two thirds of the rent, so each person pay $333.33 for the common area. Then the bedrooms for the remaining $500 would be split $250 per bedroom.
583.33 for single person
458.33 each per couple
The other expenses split equally.
If this is an issue now though think of the trouble in a few months. |

Same as what I told you before Spitty (and what Ian said).
60 for the couple, 40 for the single in regards to rent. It would be unfair to split it 33/33/33 if the couple is paying 1/3 of the price for only half the amount of living space (since the rooms are the same size).
Utilities and other bills should be split 3 ways since there are 3 of you using them.
If the girls boyfriend moves into the apartment, you'd split the rent in 4 so you are all paying the same price for the same amount of living space.
Edit....hmmmm now that I've read all the posts, I'm actually learning more towards it being split equally 3 ways b/c it's only the bedroom that you're sharing with your boyfriend. The rest of the space you're sharing with everyone. |
