settle an argument for me (pg. 7)

Without reading any comments except for the thread starter's post. Here's my opinion. It's based on an unfair taxi ride I took with my girlfriend and a stranger from Vina del Mar to Valparaiso in Chile on New Year's Eve.

There were 3 passengers in total. If I had it my way the cab would have been split 50/50. My half being for my girlfriend and myself, the other half the stranger.

Anyway, it was split 3-way and I had to pay 2/3 of the friggin' taxi ride. Bastard(stranger)lucked out on New year's Eve because I was in a jolly mood. LOL In retrospect, this thread gave me flashbacks of my taxi cab bill. :stongue:

With all this back-and-forth.....I wonder what Spitty and her roomates decided to do?

When you are an adult you have to learn to live within a budget. If you cannot afford a place then you can't live there. Plain and simple. If someone can't afford the same as you, then they can't really be your roomate.

now what if the single roomate decides to get a boyfriend and split the rent with him?

then they split the 1/3 and each are only paying 1/6 of the original cost while the other two are paying 1/3 each (unless of course your write something up in a contract them if another one comes in you split it up 4 ways)

What happens if Spitty & her bf broke up or one of them decides to move out? Who's going to pay for that *extra* 1/3? I know if I was in the single room, I wouldn't want to pay more just because one of the other roomates broke up.

The easiest thing would be just to split it 50/50 based on the rooms, and then let the individuals in the rooms decide how they'll split it up.

Doesn't matter if your the best of friends or not, money always causes a problem, so the best thing to do would be to make a decision on what seems fair, even though you may not agree with it.

agreed.

While the single person does get a room to themself, they are sharing the rest of the apt with two people (and two who are together), rather than one. that, to me, justifies splitting everything three ways.

At worst, I'd agree to just splitting all expenses (utilities, phone, net, cable, etc) three ways and maybe paying a *bit* more than a 1/3 of the rent(maybe 40/30/30), but that's as far as I'd go.

Really, what benefit is there for the person in the single room to allow their friend's partner to live there if they don't get a substantial break on rent and utilities out of it?

Otherwise, I'd just find a 2 bedroom apt with 1 other person. 10% less on rent is nowhere near worth it (IMHO) to deal with a 3rd person being there.

having said that, I wouldn't ever put myself in this position anyway...whether as the single person or as a member of the couple. There's WAY too much potential for drama on so many fronts...

That would be illegal under the leasing agreement.

If the single roommate wants to bring in somebody else, that would require changing the lease. Even if it's just an informal verbal agreement, there has to be an agreement and part of that agreement would be renegotiating the rent 4 ways, probably with the understanding that if somebody leaves, it would revert back to the original 3-way split.

A residential tenant can't simply invite another person in to live with her without permission. That's not a serious concern in any rental situation (and if it were, it would apply to any rent-splitting arrangement, not just one involving a couple).

Once again, only a small fraction of the rent in any unit is actually based on the bedrooms. 50/25/25 is insane - if you wanted to be mathematical, you could do it based on square footage factoring out the common areas, but even that is petty and pointless.

ummm. of course they would split it 4 ways. no contract needed.

that would be a tough one but that would be a discussion between the two girls when it happens. they would probably all have to move out or split the rent evenly.

we decided a 2bdrm wasn't going to work. it was a 3bdrm or nothing. Laura decided she couldn't afford it and is living on campus. No before you decide that is cruel, we talked about doing 3ways on a 2bedroom, but she couldn't afford that either. She wouldn't have money for furniture, a fridge or bills to cover internet. It wouldn't have worked no matter what we decided. Our budgets weren't even in the same ballpark. Luckily we are both happy with this decision and all the drama (a lot of which I didn't get into in this thread) is over.

SO relieved!!!

Glad to hear that everything worked out. With all of the stress that you were getting merely over the rent and utilities didn't look like you were heading in the direction of maintaining a solid friendship after moving in together. This was definitely for the best. :)

perfect.

glad it worked out.

it is very important for everyone to be within the budget to get a place together. if you don't have that, you run into many problems.

Then you re-divvy up the rent so everyone pays 1/4th.
