Police: Woman ‘left to die’ at Markham club

June 28, 2008

Staff Reporter

York Regional Police are investigating the sudden death of a woman inside an all-ages rave club this morning.

Police were called to Club RIO on Woodbine Ave. in Markham after security guards found a 21-year-old woman lying unconscious in the club, at around 4:30 a.m. She wasn’t breathing and security guards could not find a pulse.

Police are unsure why the woman was in Markham, nor who she was with at the club. Witnesses reported that the woman was seen at the club with two men prior to her death, and she may have arrived with another woman.

“She was left to die at the back of a club,” said Det. Constable Jim Woodcock, adding that she was frothing at the mouth when she was found.

A man identifying himself as the club's manager refused to comment this evening.

A post-mortem is to be conducted on Sunday, but police suspect the woman died from a drug overdose.

Police are unsure why the woman was in Markham, nor who she was with at the club. Police say there were approximately 300 people at the club that night.

Club RIO is open on Friday and Saturday nights, from 11 p.m.-7 a.m.

“We’ve had numerous drug arrests, and numerous violent assaults in the parking lot, in the club, stabbings. It is a problem,” said Woodcock, who recalled a homicide at the club in 2004.

Police are looking for witnesses who were at Club RIO on Friday night. The woman’s name has not been released because her family has yet to be notified. She was from Surrey, B.C.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 905-881-1221 x.7541.

On a more serious side...that's really unfortunate. I can't believe the people she was with just left her like that. That's really disgusting that her own friends would do that (or at least the people she came with), let alone other people in the club didn't get security when they saw a random woman passed out in the back of a club.

Another interesting story:

Two arrested in frat house drug raid

June 28, 2008

Police looking for narcotics forced their way in to a University of Toronto-area fraternity house Friday night after residents refused to open the door. Some residents attempted to flee out the back door, where they were met by waiting officers.
Inside the historic Delta Kappa Epsilon Alpha Phi (DKE) frat house on St. George St., investigators found drugs valued at more than $125,000. Two men were arrested, one a current U of T student and the other a U of T graduate.

Investigators discovered a large quantity of cocaine, ketamine, and psilocybin-also known as “magic mushrooms”.

The bust followed a lengthy investigation, police say.

According to the fraternity’s Web site, Delta Kappa Epsilon Alpha Phi has a long history with U of T students.

DKE was founded in 1898, operating out of a variety of locations around the university until it acquired its current location at 157 St. George St. in 1964, for the price of $1. The property had previously belonged to the Eaton family and had been a seminary before the fraternity moved in. Notable alumni include George A. Drew, former Premier of Ontario from 1943 to 1948.

Attempts to contact DKE were unsuccessful.

While the fraternity strives to cultivate “the advancement of intellectual excellence” and the “development of gentlemanly dignity”, the Web site says it seeks to add something extra to the U of T experience.

“It is accurate to say that the social and personal skills learned here are not taught in class. `Deke’ helps sculpt well-rounded gentlemen, scholars, and jolly good fellows.”

University of Toronto spokesperson Rob Steiner said that while some students are members, the fraternities themselves are completely separate from anything endorsed by the school.

“It’s not campus housing, its just students living in a building owned by other students or another organization,” he said. “Frats are not part of the University of Toronto.”

Yong Park, 21, a current student at U of T, faces drug possession charges. Wasseem Malleye, 29, a graduate of the university, is charged with drug and weapons offences. They appeared in court this morning.

i really dont think what she injested is the problem here. the issue at hand is the fact that her death could've been prevented.

How do we know her friends "left her to die"? Maybe they parted ways before the OD. Maybe she collapsed and died quickly after that. To say "she was left to die at the back of a club" is a cop giving a sound bite.
