| I like Lawrence's album "This Night Will Last Forever", its like atmospheric/abstract/deep techno at its finest, this new tune also sounds in the same style, although in a more mainstream, watered-down way. Its still good though, from the sample a tad faceless and generic but ok. I can't see how this is progressive though. What is "prog-techno" lol!? |

That is the superpitcher remix.
here is the original
Lawrence is imo one of the finest producers out there at the moment. He releases a lot of tracks but quality never seems to suffer.
His label dial and releases as sten as well are all phenomonal. |

i haven't heard the whole thing, but this sample just sounds like prog to me, not sure what else to say about that lol
prog techno is a pretty easy concept to understand
what prog house is to house, prog techno is to techno.
a lot of the time that boils down to a more dreamy, flowery, melodic, take on the raw form, with more outside references.
another way to describe it would be 'techno that tiesto plays' :p
the original is pretty nice
i would describe this more as atmospheric techno but it is a very fine line between prog and atmospheric techno. haha
the reason i would not call this prog is because the elements are discrete and because it is tonal and not melodic. Still though, there is a fine, fine line between atmospheric techno and prog :p this is more on the prog end for me.
pure atmospheric techno for me is more like convextion/erp

one of my favorites from convextion:

donato dozzy makes/plays great atmospheric techno

listen to the abstraction that's present here compared to the sample in the OP |

i thought that stuff was called dub techno or "comfort noise". stuff like maurizio or studio 1. ive never heard the term atmospheric techno before. |

dub techno is dub techno because of its descendency from jamaican dub.
stuff more like the rhythm and sound project versus maurizio.
there's a lot of cross over
i guess you could say dubby techno as opposed to dub techno lol
dub techno is roots oriented, dubby techno is just an adjective to describe the deep, padded sound in some very minimal, atmospheric techno tracks.
lawrence like chesco said also makes a ton of great atmospheric techno.
kirk degiorgio also makes atmospheric techno that crosses over with deep house. could be considered proggy i guess

atmospheric techno all the way. you could make prog comparisons, but given that it was the first of it's kind i wouldn't really say it was progressive. it's the real thing. and it's not melodic really, because it's just looped arps with parameters changing. the essence of techno is the machine, not the composition |

Most convextion stuff is just melodic techno to me, the ERP stuff he produces is electro (in the original sense of the word). |

yeah most i suppose, but my favorite convextion tracks like 'ondes' are more atmospheric.
i think his erp stuff is too flowery to be called proper electro though :p it mostly sounds like spacier FUSE |
