I travelled south east asia, for 4 months end of last year beginning of this. Vietnam is extremley easy to do, and is an absolute stunning place, highly reccomend it. Its also just so easy...

Fly into Bangkok presumably from the US, then fly to Hanoi in the north of Vietnam, then buy an open bus ticket 26 pound.. 50 dollars or so and work your way south. Not only is the bus reliable but it also drops you off outside possible guesthouses, which are always excellent quality. expect to pay at the most 6 pound a night for decent accomodation. Food is cheap.

Hanoi, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat and Ho chi Minh city.

If you have the time consider going to Cambodia and Laos.

Noticably the north is less friendly the south.

Oh, and I would also advise going by yourself, best way to do it! If theres anything else you need advice on, feel free to give me a shout. ;

Regarding the EDM scene, there isn't one. Maybe in the big cities - Bangkok, KL and Singapore, but not in Vietnam and I didnt notice much of one in HK (extremly expensive for the drinks because of the culture...)

There's no edm scene in vietnam, they are one off events where they had big name djs play there. Tiesto and ferry corsten both played in vietnam. Vietnam is a friendly place, just dont be stupid if you do something illegal. Most of the time you can bribe your way out.Saigon(aka ho chi minh city)offers the best night life, but hanoi i heard is a great place to visit.

Out of curiosity, Which decent bars and clubs are in Saigon? I, amongst other and had great difficulty in finding anywhere remotley decent. GoGoGo bar on the corner was the only one as well as a club called 'Apocalypse' I think..

I found hanoi a bit of a downer after saigon. saigon people are bubbly and open, a much more vibrant city.
Hoi An was probably the only place I wish I had more time to hang around, rather than be on an itenerary.

be careful what you eat, all but one person in the group I went with had extended stints on the toilet. I came back 7kg lighter.

Here are some very interesting interviews with people who spent some time in Vietnam.

i checked the net and it looks like ill be flying in around late feb for 1300$ round trip. i fly from reno to san fran, sf to hong kong, hk to ho chi minh. i havent made plans on my travelling yet but ill be travelling alone. for the most part im gonna bring my dslr and a 2 lenses, a smaller camcorder and thats about it.

i figured music down there isnt anything crazy but im not really gonna be there for that. i think ill be there for about a month maybe even 5 or 6 weeks and haevnt decided if i want to leave and check out any other countries

Here are some ideas for you... why not visit Laos and Cambodia if you have some time?

Definitely get in to those countries before they get waaaay too touristy (which is already happening).

Wow I'm jealous. I want to do Laos-Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand trip soon (maybe end of '09)

Yeah, definitly do Laos, Vang Vieng for the tubing is possibly the best thing I have ever done, and will be difficult to beat.
Tubing down a river going from bar to bar in 35 degree heat, drinking loads of alcohol and jumping from 30ft rope swings and doing ziplines. All on Christmas Day!!
Do a search on youtube for videos.

Cambodia is easy to do, As the above post said.. Do it now, Wouldnt bother going Thailand imo, really touristy.. Full moon party is about the best thing to do! Have fun!! I also wouldnt stay to long in HK, 4 or 5 days max.
