Umm I say Pics or STFU. He's probably a really DJ anyway so you still lose. By the way there is a BIG difference between a LIVE set and a DJ set in case you didn't know. |
There was nothing more then a laptop and an couple of EFX units in his setup. |

People with multiple talents are just more appreciated than people with a single talent. Now if it's mediocre or not that's a matter of opinion most of the time.
THEN AGAIN, you take guys like Burridge, Howells, Digweed, Pappa who rarely ever produce and they are the guys to beat on the decks. So I guess it must be a matter of how many contacts you have, and your charisma. |
People like Digweed, Sasha or even Paul van Dyk (he isn't producing that much) have the advantage of being in the business long enough to not having to produce in order to get gigs |

Thank you, I rest my case.
Anyway to further encourage this interesting issue Rob brought up I want to ask how the eff did Howells and Burridge reach the status they have today? |

"I" being the majority of people who are going to go out. If RJT comes to Philadelphia, chances are he's not going to get a crowd. Why? Because no one has heard of him. Gui Boratto comes to town and people who hardly ever go out are going to make a special occasion.
Don't act like you know me. I've seen hundreds of different dj's, most of which are not popular and never will be. |
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSHHHHHHHH! |

They did it when people still cared. |

I didn't know djing in Ableton made you a live act. So Sasha is a live act now? Pretty cool. |

I've never heard of Boratto playing anything but his own works off ableton with a uc-33e. When was it?
As form the topic, as a wise young DJ of international acclaim once told me, the music you produce becomes your international business card for being able to sell yourself (and as consequence get good DJing gigs). It's just the way things are now, a means to an end.
The same person stressed that producing for DJs should not be looked at as "how am I gonna make something decent with my name on it so I can get more gigs" but "what kind of lasting contributions am I going to make to dance music beyond a few sets I played?"
Something to that effect anyway, and I like to think about it in that way... |

At least you know when you've missed the point completely. Sit down, Jim, no one cares. |

I think that's a nice way of looking at it - but it still effectively says "Tough , you have to produce now too even if you don't want to, aren't good at it, and are a reasonably talented DJ."
That may be life, I still don't have to like it. |

You mean you did. You've gotten so worked up over this thing that you are finding it difficult to even consider someone elses opinion. It's pretty interesting to watch you boil a little though. |
