This thread is making me want to go back and figure out how I ever considered myself a trance fan. "Trance" has become such a dirty word, and I want to try to get out of that mindset. I'm the kind of person that accepts good music as good music, and I've pushed trance away as of late. I bet some of these suggestions would help me do just that.

Well I think part of the problem you might have is pretty well illustrated in this thread: what the is trance, exactly?

:conf:

There are so many recommendations in this thread from all over the place, some of which sound absolutely nothing like the others.

I admittedly got into "trance" that a lot of people might call progressive house or leftfield - and then you have all the colors in the "accepted" trance rainbow (tech trance, euphoric trance, uplifting trance, outhouse trance, unicornegasus trance, etc.) - so I think it's all just really muddled.

I know this might be an unpopular opinion, but I really think part of trance becoming a dirty word has to do with the popularity of ASOT. Very little of what appears on there the past couple of years has struck me as trance - more along the lines of commercial/euro dance music sprinkled liberally with random offerings from the realms of trance, house, and techno. The shows success has likely only perpetuated trance becoming a dirty word because unfortunately for a lot of us, ASOT isn't, and really never was the trance that we came up on.

Definitely not a slight against Armin - he can't control the success he's had, nor what he enjoys/makes a living playing. And I don't think it was his intention to add to the confusion at all - he capitalized on a brand/niche he created for himself, like any of us would, and an unfortunate byproduct of that seems like it might be that there is a very, very diverse, and not at all uniform definition of trance out there these days.

The one thing I find pretty awesome about this thread in particular is that a lot of the recommendations offered really represent the people who've put them up well. It's nice to see how so many of us who play and listen to such different music these days got to where we are - and I think a lot of the recommendations reflect the personalities of the MWTA's posting them.

Very true. I think I was more pointing out the fact that, a lot of times, I will not even bother having a look at something that is labeled as trance, or at a name/producer that is associated with trance, under the assumption that it's going to sound like ASOT... which is not really fair.

Or, I might hear a "stereotypical trance sound" such as a supersaw or trance pluck and not even bother listening to the track. Which is disappointing, because when it comes down to it... there is still good music to be found. I don't dismiss rock because it has a lead guitar.

I'm glad that I haven't entirely succumbed to the blatant hipsteresque douchebaggery that seems to start taking over after people like myself have started branching out. I would have missed stuff like this, which would have been easy for me to immediately dismiss. But, I pop on a pair of headphones and listen to that and I remember why "trance" (or, my own perspective or definition thereof) got me into this whole thing. I feel almost like it's something I have to keep on top of. Just because I've found an appreciation for music which is more (minimalistic) (groovy) (intelligent) (atonal) (insert descriptor here) doesn't mean I should suddenly blow off music that I would've originally liked, and I've tried to keep that in mind.

Where did you hear it? That track's brand-spankin-new. :)

And yeah, on the re-work, I was thinking of making it cater a little better to the types of sets I've been playing out lately. I always get asked to play it but it never seems to fit with what I'm playing. I'd like to remedy that. :) As well as update it with the 2 additional years of production experience I've had since then.

Tastes can certainly change over time, but it's where we've been that makes us who we are now - and that's exactly why I have a framed copy of Armin - Blue Fear sitting right over my DJ/studio setup right now.

I may not like a lot of what he's done as a DJ, and I may not even pay much attention to the likes of guys like Sasha or Oakenfold anymore, but to deny their influence on me, or to say that I can't go back and feel exactly the same today as I did when I first heard my favorites from them would be absurd.

Though I will say I still think at least a handful of MWTA's would argue that I succumbed to hipster-douchbagginess years ago :p
