What? This is impossible. The FIA doesnt have to compete with nascar...... and doing races in the U.S. or Canada does not affiliate them with it.

Did you get this statement from the F1 website or the FIA website? Sounds made up.

Formula 1 does not allow tobacco sponsorship.

i was just stating a company that would throw millions at events, i know it could not happen.

look how many F 1 drivers are going to Nascar nach...there is a lot of money in it, its growth is a lot bigger than F 1.

A survey by ESPN has revealed the extent of Formula One’s struggle to capture the imagination of American sports fans. It ranked fourth out of all motor sports in a popularity poll. Top was NASCAR with three-fifths of the vote (59.5%), followed by NHRA drag racing (13.4%) and motorcycle racing (9.7%).

Only 6.3% of fans voted for Formula One, but it did rank ahead of the two US single-seater series the Indy Racing League (6.1%) and Champ Car (1.4%).

Scott Speed, Scuderia Toro Rosso-Cosworth, Barcelona, 2006The poll underlines the general lack of enthusiasm for ‘road racing’ in America - NASCAR and IRL racing is predominantly oval-based and and drag racing is, of course, the art of going in a straight line as quickly as possible.

Formula One has a lot of work to do to repair its reputation in the States after a farcical six-car race in 2005 and the infamous Ferrari ‘dead heat’ in 2002. The presence of American Scott Speed (pictured) may help, but the quality of racing also needs to greatly improve to win over American audiences weaned on high-action sports.

But that’s not the greatest difference between the two. No - what really separates them, and what should trouble the likes of Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley the most, is that NASCAR serves up constant racing and overtaking week in, week out.

Formula One cannot compete with that. So dependent are the F1 cars on their aerodynamics that overtaking is virtually impossible, as has been clear in a string of catatonically dull Grands Prix this year.

F1 may straddle the globe, unlike US-centric NASCAR, but the racing it imported to Sepang, Imola, Barcelona, Silverstone, Indianapolis and Magny-Cours this year was hardly first-class.

The only one i know is the old bmw driver Montoya who was a pretty good driver back when bmw was in tip top shape. Too much money is made in by formula 1 drivers for them to move to nascar. f1 still has the best technology in cars today, and its the most expensive sport in the world. I dont think a big heap of chevy or ford box indimidates mclaren or ferrari.

Has there been other f1 drivers that have gone to nascar that i am not aware of?
elFreak
while i agree that it is more expensive, it does not make it for a more entertaining race..

read the articles i posted.

drag racing, motorcycle racing, nascar are all more popular...so they go somewhere that this problem does not exist.

Jacques Villeneuve is also in Nascar, and if you google you will see that many teams are courting current F - 1 drivers.

Nascar makes big bucks with an overhead cost that is miles under f -1.

Nascar more entertaining than f1? No way jose. Someone running around anti-clock wise is not fun. Not even the faster IRL cars running in an oval are fun tow watch.

Thats true, probably the cost of running a nascar team is a fraction of what it cost to run a formula 1 team.

As for drivers doing the move... a quick google search

The top-earning NASCAR drivers make more money off the racetrack than on it. Jeff Gordon, the sport's all-time leading money winner, made $32 million over the last year; $17 million came from endorsements and royalties on merchandise, and $15 million came from his salary and race winnings.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., the second-highest earner at $31 million, made $21 million from licensing and endorsement income from the likes of PepsiCo (nyse: PEP - news - people ), Anheuser-Busch (nyse: BUD - news - people ) and Adidas (other-otc: ADDDY.PK - news - people ). Earnhardt's passionate following, which has its origins in his famous father's career, has translated into an abundance of riches despite his declining performance (he won six Sprint Cup races in 2004 but only two since).

Schumacher, a seven-time world champ who retired at the end of last season, was the highest paid F1 driver ever at $62.4 million. He made at least another $17 million from personal endorsements and merchandising. In the sports world, only golfer Tiger Woods ($100 million) made more money than Schumacher.

Raikkonen is earing 51 million this season and i imagine around 10 in endorsments.

You said popularity, and then brought up movement of drivers from one side to the other. If it was for north america we would all be riding around in chevys playing baseball and hockey. Eating burgers and being fat.
