I'm tired of hearing the same bull over and over again, and I think with the amount of people that show up to Guvernment almost every weekend when trance is being played shows, there is a real market out there, just maybe not as popular as others.

Skasians will listen to anything so they don't count.

Do I believe there is a market out there for trance? Absolutely.

But you'll have to do a lot of promoting and be prepared for a lot of sucky nights. Because it'll be hard for people to come out esp. on weeknights for an unknown DJ. Personally I think you'll get a bigger turn out on Fri due to the fact that it's the weekend, and nobody put a trance night on a Fri for the longest time. But how many clubs actually put on a trance night? Not many... That means a market is not being served so there is hope for your night. :)

I think if you're willing to build up your names with some international DJs it'd work better. First you gotta attract a crowd, then work on retention. I can think of couple of names that I'd think draw a crowd and not be that expensive. (Andy Moor, Thomas Bronzwaer, Marcel Woods, Breakfast, Sean Tyas, Simon Patterson, Sied van Riel, Thomas Datt, etc). I know 1 semi known UK DJ/producer that'll play for very little fee providing you pay for a flight and room. Same thing with a Brazillian DJ) With right connections and a lot of digging, surely you can get an int. dj, at least for opening night. (And weeknight bookings should be cheaper and US east coast trance DJs shouldn't be that expensive to bring over)

Not that I think you suck, Kris (and I don't know who you have in mind as co residents) but you're an unknown in Toronto. You'll also have to meet the tastes of many trance fans because they probably don't like tech trance for hours (I know you play a variety of style as occassion requires)

So, given a decent venue with decent drink prices and a sound system that doesn't suck and residents that can play a varies style of trance, would I give a Thurs night a shot? Sure. (except I work most Thurs nights w/o car) :(

Thursdays are the new friday

Thursdays have been the new Friday for quite a while...

At least in University life it is. No one really has classes on Fridays and as far as I can remember, Thursday was always the biggest drinking/party night of the week when I was back in school.

Even now in at my real job, Thursdays (aka, Double Thursdays) are the biggest night for staff to have parties or go out or something like that.
It's always quite interesting the see what kind of shape people are in the next day haha.

Hmmm... Just looking at Stoneface & Terminal's event dates and these guys don't get that many bookings... yet...

would love to see Kyau vs. Albert again :)

I think that's an awesome idea Kris. It nice to see someone with as much passion as you do and a load of trance in your pants!
With that said, I'd like to see DJ's such as Lange, Wippenberg, Andy Moor, etc...
Also, I agree with the whole "Sunday nights would feel like a drag cuz tomorrow's Monday", so THURSDAYS for me!
I still have to come and watch your ass spin! sorry :(

it's one thing to support the big names. it's another thing to support locals (or distinct lack of)

hence why I think someone can find a niche in the local scene... meet the demand of toronto trance fans who don't have a lot of local trance djs to support. given a decent venue, cheap drink price, reasonable cover on int dj nights, GOOD TUNES, and lots of hard work (and promoting) and you got yourself a pretty good thing.
I think Fri nights would work out better but eh.

No offense taken Yohan, I know I'm still an "unknown" here as I've only been in Toronto a year. I don't expect to have a killer following that brings 50+ people every night. It's not about me, or any other dj who will be spinning, it's about the music! I could give a rats ass if I dj'd up in the corner in a blacked out area and no one saw my face, big deal, as long as I play good music and see a dancefloor moving to trance bombs all night, there should be no greater satisfaction for a dj.

I remember when I started, I was a huge self-promo whore, but the reason behind was no to necessarily promote myself, but to promote the music I loved, and promoting myself was the only way to do it. I promo'd the out of myself, and it worked, and pretty well I might add. But I'm 30 years old now and don't exactly have the time, effort for such things (as most dj's will tell you, if you're not pro by now, it's a hard fire to keep lit). That's why dj's need managers, and I see that's how the big guys do it. There's not to many dj's out there over 25 who still have that fire they had 10 years ago to go out every night and meet as many people as possible and big themselves up to the point you wanna knock the guy out :p

I'm trying to help bring a musical genre back to Toronto that people DO love. And because the scene is so afraid of change, it makes it 100 times harder for someone like me continue to "big" myself up when no one's going to give it a shot. But the tables have turned! With a new club opening, and an owner who sees the potential in the music and the passion in the dj's, there is NO WAY this night will not succeed :D
Trance is coming back to Toronto people, like it or not!

Not to squash your dreams Kris, but I just don't think there's a market to have a weekly trance night, unless you want a small crowd.

Trance in this town is really about the big events that bring in international talent, that happen once every so often, I just don't see a weekly event working, here or elsewhere. I'm willing to bet if you go to Europe or anywhere else, that you won't see a weekly trance night and for a reason.

I respect that you want to do this because you love the music, but a club has to be profitable to some degree to stay alive, and I kinda see a weekly trance night as a flop every single time. A few dedicated hardcore fans is just not enough.

And that's exactly why we're talking about Thursday nights and not Saturday nights

For those who love it, and want to hear it.... it's not about profit, but a means of expression, promotion and passion, to give a glimpse of hope that there is still a community that is dedicated to bringing a form of EDM that many still enjoy, and hopefully... support ;)

I've heard it enough times now that I'm chasing a dead dream.... but after all these years of hearing the same thing over and over again... the one thing that's kept my fire going.... is actually being a part of that community that wants it to succeed, rather than letting it die a slow death.

I'm not asking for anything. But for those who truly believe that music is a universal language, trance lovers know that the dream will never die :D
