Bringing some trance to Toronto... again. (pg. 4)

Doesn't have to be a weekly thing. Bi weekly at the start might be better, pending on how things go.
Not everyone can come out every week |

I'm going to have to agree with Arnej on this.
It's throughly admirable that you're going through with trying to plan for this Kris, but you have to do it carefully and work within your demographic as opposed to changing it.
I'm by no means an expert on the trance scene in Toronto, but I doubt anyone would disagree when I say that it's not booming. Sod the past / what it once was / the heyday, it just isn't a profitable market at the moment. This is evidenced by a general reluctance by venues to bring them in, blending them into multi-genre events, etc.
The problem Re: Toronto vs. Trance is that you've got to start relatively small and work your way up steadily from there. What's really crucial is doing what the Republicans can't seem to do - Mobilizing your base. It's going to be this set of about 100 - 150 die hards that you're going to need at your events buying their admission, drinking their faces off and spreading the word.
Just accept the fact that you're not going to have capacity crowds of ten thousand in some massive -off venue with lazers shooting all over Hell's half acres - You're going to need to go underground and work your way up from there. |

There's this notion that Toronto has this amazing trance scene, but on a larger scale of things it actually isn't. There's maybe 100-150 dedicated fans who mostly frequent this board that make up the 'core' of this fanbase, but this is not alone to make any trance event successful, unless you (as the promoter) are fine with a deficit and those are acceptable sometimes because there are sometimes benefits to your reputation and name as a club, but to sustain any sort of lifetime doing this would just mean going into the negative at the end of it.
Not to disrespect the owners of Rio and Viva, but I am willing to bet that anytime they brought in a relatively known DJ that, while the night may have seemed 'successful' from a turnout point (or maybe even not), that financially at best, they broke even, hence the closure of the club.
This is not meant to insult anyone but just rather shed (albeit negative) some light onto the reality of running a club that wants to attract a trance crowd.
As someone mentioned before me, to me a trance party is about a big gathering of people all enjoying the music on whatever degree they enjoy it on, with a big sound system, lasers, the whole shabang.
There certainly are clubs that aren't very large that still can bring in the international talent and be successful, but to have it happen on a weekly basis? I'd say very very difficult. |

Wow Kris, I've always been interested in doing something like this for the longest time, but lack of initial capital and network of friends to come out week in and week out. But I would gladly help you in anyway possible if you're actually serious about it. I really love Trance and would LOVE to get a steady weekly thing for Toronto. |
Thanks Vince, it's really good to see your interest, we need as much support as we can get. Even if it means just talking about it with people or making it out every once in a while. The more involved one becomes, the more rewards one reaps  |

I totally get what you are saying, and I do agree with you... to some extent. I think you guys are missing a major point here though... the club is not dependent on a trance night working or not. The club will be making it's money on friday and saturday nights. Of course I'd be looking at filling the club on Thursday nights too (as a good business plan would want), but it's far beyond my initial expectations. Basically this is the reward I'm reaping is for showing my continued support and I didn't abandon anyone, it actually brought me closer to people, and helped me see the true motivation behind their purpose, to just provide people with a wikkid time!
It's not like if the trance night doesn't bring in the money, they are going to close the club down! Let's not forget that Rio closed it's doors, NOT due to a lack of turnout or funds, but due to many other reasons. The biggest night they had was when we brought Jon O'Bir. And yes, by a turnout standpoint, it was a success, but financially, well, it was a close one... but that's when we really saw the potential! :D
Basically what it's going to come down to is planning & promotion. I have some very talented and educated people working beside me to make this happen, and although they may not be showing the same excitement as me on these boards atm, I can guarantee you they want to see it succeed just as much as I do. This is just the first small step for us! At no point did I try to give the impression that this is going to be the next biggest thing to hit the Toronto scene. I'm not trying to change the scene... just give it some diversity! |

Like I said before, I applaud you for your progressive vision - I just can't understand why any owner would take on a project like this if it was clear that it would not profit.
Just curious, what venue are we talking here and what is capacity? |

| Also, probably the biggest reason why Viva/Rio closed was due to it's location. Nobody would make the trip to Markham everytime. |

That, and it had numerous violations for serving alcohol to under agers, lots of drugs were found in the club, a few people were killed outside of it, and the last one was a girl found dead inside of the club. |

Kris kudos for taking on this HUGE challenge. I have to say it's not going to be easy BUT nothing is impossible.
If the above is the case then I don't see why you shouldn't do this on Thursday nights.
I went to VIVA many times and each time I had a blast but it was a mission getting there and another mission getting home in the morning, so location is key! I think at the beginning maybe try a monthly or a bi-weekly night and evaluate the turnout. You need to build your brand from the underground :):)
I voted Thursday for obvious reasons :D:D:D
Good luck :) |
