Not to squash your dreams Kris, but I just don't think there's a market to have a weekly trance night, unless you want a small crowd.
Trance in this town is really about the big events that bring in international talent, that happen once every so often, I just don't see a weekly event working, here or elsewhere. I'm willing to bet if you go to Europe or anywhere else, that you won't see a weekly trance night and for a reason.
I respect that you want to do this because you love the music, but a club has to be profitable to some degree to stay alive, and I kinda see a weekly trance night as a flop every single time. A few dedicated hardcore fans is just not enough. |
I disagree.
It is risky business being a local trance DJ in Toronto, but surely there is a market for hardcore trance fans who just wanna hear some good tunes, regardless whether it's a local or a big name.
I submit that some of the best trance events I've been to have excellent tunes, decent club and most importantly, great vibe.
Hence why I don't like going to events headlined by Armin or Tiesto because it attracts the noobs who are just into the scene and don't know much about trance.
Small club, decent service, good tunes and great vibe. Intimate atmosphere. Not a recipe for success? |

who cares. you were a noob at one point too i'm sure. they are still supporting the scene, so what's the problem
it's because of people like armin and tiesto tapping into the mainstream crowds that is why trance gets more popular all the time, i don't see why that's a bad thing? |

because I don't like the noob crowd? I suppose I am being snobbish about the trance scene today, but I just don't have fun at Armin or Above and Beyond events.
It's good that they are supporting the trance scene, but if they don't (or more likely, not willing) to support local trance DJs, then what good are they for the trance scene in Toronto? It's one thing to come out whenever an int DJ comes into town, but how many people are willing to give locals a shot?
You're quite right that everyone used to be a noob too, and me included. But I think when I first got into trance in 01-02, the noobs were quite different than noobs of today.
I am all for supporting whoever wants to hear some good trance, and keeps an open mind |

i agree, you are right if you're speaking specifically about the toronto scene, but the truth of the matter is most people just don't care enough to go see local DJs
as arnej said, it really is a such a limited niche market, and it's just a sad reality that those who love it enough to support a local trance scene are just so few that it makes no difference. even as a massive fan of trance, i wouldn't feel compelled to attend a trance night on a weekly basis strictly because they are playing trance.
i also think (and this is just an opinion) that the pure trance sound is more suited for massive events. there's something to be said for the lights and production and masses of people that makes those events really special. if i was in a small local club listening to trance with 20 other people, i'd find myself somewhat bored
but if this is about local trance DJs not being able to become successful in toronto, i don't think it's fair to point the finger at city locals or the "lack of scene". it's up to the DJ to get their name out there, and everyone knows that today the only way you'll ever get anywhere as a DJ is to produce, start a radio show, build a following, etc. it's really up to the DJ, not the local club goers to give them a shot. i can't think of one single trance DJ who has become successful in the past few years strictly because they mix great trance, anyone can do that
kind of a lost cause as far as toronto trance is concerned i think.
sad, but true |

Have you ever been to a trance event at a small club? |

that's quite alright. everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
one of best nights I ever had. Andy Moor@ Fluid Lounge. 100 trance addicts. great tunes. awesome vibe.
well, if Kris's little venture fails, so be it. but at least he dared to try to something different in otherwise somewhat stale toronto market. |

| Also, I don't think this will be strictly locals affair. I'm sure there will be some sort of plan to bring some int DJs in as well. (Or else I'm going to kick Kris's ass) :p |

LMAO. OF COURSE we will bring in international dj's. But the timing has to be right, and so does the price! When we started bringing in internationals to Club Rio, it was planned to do it once a month, which was perfect, and I think we're going to aim for the same here. Once the club makes more money, we can afford to bring in other top headliners, and even more often.
However, that being said, we don't want people to ONLY come out when internationals are playing, right. The club needs to make money on a regular basis, and the hardest thing to do now, is getting a set base crowd. Not necessarily the same people every week, but the same numbers. And judging by the success we had at Club Rio for our trance nights there (and considering there wasn't even a liquor license!), I would think things would be even better considering the club will now be downtown, fully licensed!! :D
In regards to any trance dj making it somewhere without having productions behind them, well that's a nail on the head! The only big name trance dj I can think of in the world that doesn't produce is Eddie Halliwell, however, when's the last time he just "played" a song without puting his own edit on it. Production is KEY! But I'm not looking for the world to recognize me right now, I just want Toronto to recognize trance! :) |

| Wow Kris, I've always been interested in doing something like this for the longest time, but lack of initial capital and network of friends to come out week in and week out. But I would gladly help you in anyway possible if you're actually serious about it. I really love Trance and would LOVE to get a steady weekly thing for Toronto. |
