Well what can I say. Hmmm. I walked into the place (never been there before) and the decor got my attention right away. The tunes were groovin' and I was already feeling the vibe. It was strange at the same time 'cause I always call Guvernment my home. It has been for quite a while. So stepping into Circa for the first while was kinda strange. Almost like I was cheating on Guv somehow. I was approached almost right away by members of TA. They all recognised me... I guess it was the bald head. Later that night I was also recognised by ppl from Facebook. Now here's the kicker... pretty much everyone asked/commented on the same thing. They asked where my camcorder was? Man I felt as if I was naked without it to tell you the truth, and I wish I had it that night. Apparently it's Circa's policy not to allow camcorders in, but I saw a few "professional" looking ones up on stage thought the night recording the festivities. The vidcams are easily double or more than what I paid for mine. I think the pros used these brands I seen, but they weren't more than double the size of mine. Obviously their quality would be apparent if you compared them to mine.
Anyway... after a while they started to let the ppl go upstairs to snoop around. This is where I was becoming more and more impressed with the place. Every turn I took was like some kind of Easter hunt. You never knew what was around the corner or up yet another flight of stairs. Now from guys point of view, I found there were many sexy looking gals as we walked around. There was this one room that felt like Guv's Orange Room, but had it's own distinct flavor... in red. I really liked the look. Another room had these bunnies with cigarettes behind the bar. Off to the side of that place was this glass enclosed collection of these silly looking bunnies going round and round. I really wished I had my vidcam to record them. So cute. At the very top was one room that, at the beginning of the night, spun some wicked electro. I was diggin' it as the style of music reminded me of The Gallery at Guv... only this was much larger and nicely lit. As I returned later to this area, it was apparent it was popular since it was jammed packed. As a matter of fact the whole place was rammed with ppl, from the smoking area to the highest spot available. I must note, though, that the smoking area was very bleak. I'm so used to seeing The Guv's and how great they have theirs' set up that I was a tad disappointed with Circa's. They really should make it more fun out there. Now I don't smoke, but my friends do and it would be nice to hang with them out there if it looked appealing. Oh well.
Carl Cox set came on and right from the get-go he never let me down. I've never seen him live B4 and waited for the right time when he was in T.O. spinning on a weekend instead of a work-night. God dam his is good! I don't know what time he finished as I left about 5:20am, but there were quite a few ppl on the main floor grooving to his beats.
As for this venue in the Toronto scene? To those of you who are connected with Guv, take note. Although Circa is still a puppy compared to you as being a big dog... watch out. From what I seen tonight, this puppy is growing and it's teeth are getting bigger from what I heard that night. Perhaps the time will come sooner than you think and this "puppy" just may bite the dominate dog on it's ass and take it's place as the "pack leader". Time will tell.
To Orin and "the ppl above" I hope you reconsider allowing my vidcam in on future big events, because from the positive responses I got tonight, it's like it's expected now for me to record these event's... all for the love of the clubbing industry. |

Wow.
Pre jam = awesomeness.
Circa, WOW. (I suck at leaving early b/c of work.) Gah.:( |

Not too impressed, but since I didn't have much in the way of expectations, I can't say I was really disappointed either. I've written so many positive reviews this summer, I guess I was due for this, haha...
Walked in to Doman & Pettigrew (pretty sure it was them opening) playing some minimal techy crap for an hour or two. Snooze-fest, especially after all the great techno last weekend. Then they finished with techy trance, which was just really weird. Really the least interesting set I've heard from them to date, and that part actually did disappoint me because I know they can do so much better.
As for The Carl... well, he was dropping bombs, there's no question about that. But somebody needs to take away his computer and send him back to regular decks so he can't do "edits", because his set had no flow whatsoever and he just couldn't keep the energy up. I am not exaggerating when I say that for the first hour and a half at least, we would get maybe 1 minute of actual beats between the 2-3 minute breakdowns. I'm hedging bets that most of the people who post that he was wicked awesome are people that don't like to go all-out on the dance floor, because there was simply no way to get a groove on. It was impossible. There were more breakdowns than a Tiesto set.
Crowd was also a disaster. I haven't been to Circa that many times - maybe it's just the normal crowd there, I don't know - but it was packed, full of poseurs, hopeless drunks and sketchpads, and just general stupidity. Our little overhang was alright, mainly because there were enough of us to form a protective phalanx, but even the traffic passing by was tragic. At least 3 people tripped and fell on the step (funny the first few times but enough, seriously...), there were a few "gridlock" instances with huge masses of people all trying to go different ways and clogging up the walkway, and one bitch stepped on my toes with her heel, stood like that for a good 5 seconds, looked directly at me with my "what the !?" expression, then walked away without even apologizing. I saw a little splinter group with Cribby and a bunch of others on my way out, in a different area near the 2nd floor stairs - maybe it was less obnoxious there?
Lights were mostly OK for once, although I did get blinded a few times.
Fortunately, and this was the reason I went in the first place, it was a party night, almost everybody I love to do it up with was there, so it was good times regardless of the mess described above. I think if I'd gone alone, I would not have made it more than a half hour into Carl's set.
Carl did start to improve after about 2 hours (presumably when he started to sober up a bit), although every now and then he'd still regress back to the incessant breakdowns. I think it was around 4 when I decided that his set had gotten decent, but just too cliché and predictable, so I left.
I'm done with Carl Cox. The man obviously knows what he's doing, I don't doubt that, but he's gone far, far off the beaten path of amazing classic sets we all heard years ago. He draws a crowd, but I'd prefer not to endure another night of poorly-edited tech cheese. I'm thinking "Oakenfold" here. |

Overall ing fabulous night!
I was a little overwhelmed with the amount of rooms. I like to wander....take off by myself but I was a lil hesitant because it is so easy to loose people in there. Beautiful club overall.
Carl dominated the dancefloor. This is my second time seeing him so I don't have much to compare him to. But I did prefer him at guv. I got lost in him at guv.
and the crowd was not sketch what so ever.
Nice to meet you Ravist and Oz! :):) |

came in super excited and left a bit disapointed. :( many of my friends were loving the carl last night....i was hardly groovin.
His sets was filled with old school tracks, mashups and breakdowns all over. It started getting better around 2:30 when he dropped that track with saxophones.....AMAZING track!!
As digi said, his set had little flow and some transitions were pretty bad. Starting at 3:30, he started getting harder and making me happy. Sucks that he couldnt keep the levels up for more than 3 tracks :(
it was pretty ing busy last nite compared to last friday and sunday. The drinkin/drunken crowd was annoying. The women levels were off the roof. Jamie n I kept getting distracted :D
Left at 4:45 ish and I almost couldnt my car back out of the parking lot as i think there was a shooting in the parking lot/street. Cops had 3-4 blocks shut down. Good thing my car was underground, otherwise I think the pigs would have made me wait till their done their investigation :nervous:
Overall, I give Carl 6/10, but I would definitely give him another chance. It sounds like he was much better on his b2b set with Loco last year! |

Oh and I saw all the crazy closures and cruisers when I left too... fortunately the lot exit was just outside their perimeter. |

I would pay money to see Oakie over Cox next time....
As for Circa...Yah it's beautiful...But it's just not layed out well enough to be a club...
Thanx to Petti and Adam K for the bit of VIP treatment... |
