Its like anything really , People here think tiesto is ( well too many names to mention) , but i went to his gig in london a couple of months ago and everything , the music , location and crowd was a really good night out.
I heard solarstone was playing at a local venue and i went and to be honest , it wasnt as good as you would of expected. Sorta like stick to producing.
Its the same across all genres , i saw a horrible youtube vid of katy perry singing live. The excuse of 'she cant sign live' wears thin. She obviously needs the studio equipment and vocal mastering to sound good.
Thus comes the term , im doing it for the fans not the critics.

I think its funny how much people read into these comments. I mean, it's very obvious that pvd makes music that he likes or hw wouldn't do it. I'm sure he is rich enough not to have to pander to the commercial market, especially since HE OWNS VANDIT RECORDS. So I think its plain daft that somebody would say 'hey paul, try making music for yourself rather than the clubbers or the critics', because its a given. You don't get where he is / achieve what he has done without being rediculously passionate.
Its very obvious what PVD meant when he said that - 10% of the crowd make 90% of the noise on forums like this one. He knows far better than any of us what has been working at his gigs and he is making music to suppliment that. And its never gunna please all of the forum geeks like ourselves :stongue:
I would have to agree that I prefer pvd's older sound, but then there is a lot of worse stuff knocking around than him as well. Its plain unfair to suggest he is in it for the money alone, and is unpassionate

His remarks don't seem like they do him or clubbers any favors.
In snubbing the 'critics'- those who would evaluate and scrutinize his music- it's almost as if he's saying he would rather produce music for people who simply didn't know any better, or at least didn't care.

I would say PVD is not the only so called big Dj to hit the commercial crowd. If anything I would say Armin and Tiesto are much more to blame.
I think as a creative, you have to treat it as business as well as create your own style. I'm a graphic designer and what I produce for clients at work is no refelction to my over the top style I have for my personal work.
Theres nothing to say PVD cant create commercial music, but give something back to the true fans.

But doesn't it seem just a bit odd to you that when trance DJ-producers blow up big, their tastes and preferences start running toward poppy vocals and overblown cheese rather than the decent, subtler music they used to make and spin? I guess getting more successful somehow changes their tastes and artistic ideals, right? After all, they couldn't be pandering or trying to maintain their present level of income by turning out the same old stuff again and again...

I think that what you play as a DJ largely relates to who your audience is (obviously), meaning that, when playing big off crowds full of kids who just got into trance last weekend and are about to take their first pill, you get reactions that influence what type of music you think works better. Most of those trance dudes already like pretty cheesy to begin with so it doesn't take much to push them into playing Funkagenda - What The and The Anthem every gig.

I'd say it's more like playing poppy vocals and cheesy stuff is an easy way to become more successful.

I dunno, I wonder about this. PvD, for example, used to play much less cheesy stuff than he does now, and certainly his productions -- a lot of them, at least -- were nowhere near as cheesy. I'm thinking also of Armin's remark that he would really like to play "ambient and weird" stuff but his fans wouldn't like it...

Then they started off with the wrong ing fans. It's their own fault if they can't figure out how to be successful playing music they like.
That always just sounds like an excuse to me. I certainly wouldn't be able to live that big of a lie.
