Hard to pick only 10, especially since my listening of 2008 material isn't over year. But here are my favourites so far:
Autechre - Quaristice
- even though not as innovative or groundbreaking as their earlier work, Autechre are still miles ahead from other acts, be it IDM or EDM in general.
Another Electronic Musician - Five
- deep and dubby IDM is not a new thing, but AEM's take on it is refreshing and really something special.
Benn Jordan - Pale Blue Dot (A Tribute To Carl Sagan)
- THE ambient release of 2008. Jordan's breakcore work (under The Flashbulb moniker) had a distincive melodic sound, so this album is everything one would expect from him.
Derek Carr - The Digital Space Race
- neo-detroit beatless and non-4x4 techno that would put to shame even some Detroit masters like Carl Craig and Juan Atkins.
The Black Dog - Radio Scarecrow
- another great BD release, especially downtempo and abstract parts of the album. Their techno could be better though.
Chris Clark - Turning Dragon
- Clark here almost completely turned to techno, but still succeeded to sound interesting and fresh. He remains, with Ae, the only striking force of Warp records.
Headhunter - Nomad
- listened to just 3 or 4 dubstep albums this year, and this is my favourite. Every track is unique, and basically there's no filler on this album.
M83 - Saturdays = Youth
- forget Justice, SMD or Daft Punk, if you want commercial EDM that sounds great, S=Y is the album for you. Ethereal and just beautiful.
ISO68 - Space Frames
- another downtempo/ambient release that combines electronic and classical instruments. Classy stuff.
Fennesz - Black Sea / Deadbeat - Roots And Wire / Ø - Oleva |
