..but educated people can't pump gas? Maybe someone is working there TO pay for school? And what are you paying people to do that you can't or wont do yourself?

some states don't allow you to pump your own gas. basically what i'm getting at we need varying types of people to make the world go round. if everyone was educated and felt they deserved high paying jobs who would do a number of those jobs that help the world go round. like picking fruit, janitarial work or garbage men. i am not looking down on those jobs because someone HAS to do them but if everyone were educated and felt entitled to other more academic careers who would do those types of jobs.

I was among the top-3 students in the entrance exam at the linguistics department, for instance. The government offers scholarships to those students that do well so we can dedicate more of our time to studying/doing research.

I thought that was the norm around the world :conf:
That's awesome. Yes you get bursaries and scholarships but I thought you meant literally getting paid to be there.

Isn't it essentially the same? I mean, public higher education is free here in Brazil, so it's pretty much as if I were being paid to study.

And, based on Arbiter's post, I thought it worked the same way up there :conf:

(And, yeah, it is awesome - I had to work hard for quite a while, but it paid off :))

Oh man, totally disagree. Just because they are doing these "mnml jbs' doesn't mean they aren't educated, imo. Some people are overly qualified, some just can't get work in their field due to many applicants, some may have had some sort of technical difficulty and just needed a job in a jiffy.

Uhhh...no. There are a multitude of conservative colleges and universities throughout the country. But your man, Bush, would rather spend billions on ing backwards towel heads in Afghanistan than inject knowledge into the economy, and raise the living standards of everyone by supplementing college education. For 's sake, I have to pay back what the government gives me, and what they give me is barely half of what I need. AND I GOT TO A ING STATE UNIVERSITY!!

a multitude of them huh? You can't honestly tell me state education systems are being run by conservatives. That's laughable. It's not even clost to being equal. Democrats and unions have been running the education show for a long time now, and look how well it's working out. I also went to a state school and had student loans man... $680 per credit hour worth; how do you think I feel? We hate to pay back the student loans that seem to multiply exponentially as soon as you sign on the dotted line, but we sure enjoy the professional positions that we are able to pursue as a result of our advanced education.

If you were a minority though, you'd be locked in for plenty of free money... F'd up!

never said they weren't educated. it just that some people don't NEED a degree to do their jobs or even move on in their careers so why bother with a 4 year degree? i have a masters which i actual regret getting because in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter that i have it. looks good on paper and i know what i've learned but its not going to help me get a job more so than experience. if i could do it over again i wouldn't go in debt for a degree that's not absolutely needed. if your job doesn't require the degree why bother?

What? School is one of the best things for most people so to say people shouldn't get degrees because their job doesn't need one or wont need one is kind of bullocks. Mine requires one and the one I have isn't for this field. I've also had a job where it required one but I didn't have it. I understand your point but I also think it's not fair to say "if everyone were educated and felt entitled to other more academic careers who would do those types of jobs" Everyone is entitled to any job high or low so that's pretty un just. You're also saying if Jimmy got a Masters but Jimmy is usually the one who cracks corn..who's going to crack corn? jimmy can still do it, just because he went and did 4 years to better himself doesn't mean he can't still do it. It's all about options. there will always be people to fill in those jobs.
