but you're right that is annoying...i think that is changing though. i think the nyc crowd is gaining a reputation for being an honest and tough crowd. that may have a lot to do with the fact that unlike europe, trance does not dominate the local radio here and we're less influenced by the "charts". either way markus schulz used the nyc crowd to debut "the new world", and a couple of mr. pit tracks in jan, 2009. armin roadtested L.E.D There Be Light on halloween here...that coupled with the flurry of american producers and djs like eco, breakfast, element one, tom colontonio, randy boyer, markus schulz who are making it big, shows that the nyc scene is definitely picking up

Wow, I thought I would never hear anyone say the NYC scene is picking up but me. I like this place already, haha.

hahahaha, its all good, it was fun taking the hit for the number 1 thing for a bit. nyc is a tough crowd and thats why we notice a sickkkk set from a good one when DJs play here. no doubt nyc scene is getting better tho, its nice to know that nyc has top DJs like Eco, Randy, Breakfast, Marcus Schulz, etc. but theres still a long way to go.

my point is, i don't think armin's TE and Ultra sets should be compared to nyc gigs...

why is new york so special that he will deviate from his standard set and sound? don't take this the wrong way but i think you are mistaken. each dj has a certain sound / construct of a set they hold onto and no way he is going to come to nyc a week after ultra and not play something similar. i think people are expecting too much if they think there will be some grand difference between the sets. also, lets be honest nyc is a city you want people to love you in but think about how many other cities there are around the world with an educated crowd. he'll do his best and play a decent set but i doubt it'll be earth shattering.

i'm not saying nyc is "special" in any way, i'm saying that the kind of set a dj plays in big festivals is different from the kind of set they play when they have the chance to spin for 5 or 6 hours. that kind of time frame gives you more flexibility to experiment. armin himself says in many interviews that he enjoys his 6 hour sets because they give him that flexibility - in fact this is why he came up with the "armin only" concept. in a festival you get a 2 hour set in which you want to maximize record label sales by showcasing a specific sound.

also i appreciate that new york is just a city like amsterdam, or london...but the dance scene is still growing in the US...i feel like DJs feel more of a need to impress here (where they don't have the rock star status) than elsewhere. i could be wrong, but it's just the feeling i get from going to these events and reading their blogs.

You gotta remember the DJ's job is to move the crowd. Armin's usual sets rock the crowd like it or not. So while the few people here think it's boring or cheesy or whatever, the other 95% of the crowd is going wild and that's all Armin sees and he has no real reason to switch it up. He's always played the types of sets and probably always will.
