It's the Pavlovian conditioning. If you give someone positive constant reinforcement, they'll expect it all the time and when they don't get it, they'll be very sad, but also if the reinforcement stops, it doesn't take too long to stop expecting.
If it's intermittent positive reinforcement - like email, you never know when you're gonna get it, so you keep checking - they won't expect it as much and won't be as sad when the reinforcement does not come. Also, takes a very long time to stop expecting.
