If I've hated everything about star trek in the past, is this reimagination worth $30?
Paradox Lost
Just got back from the midnight showing, and there's little that I can say about this film that hasn't already been mentioned in much greater detail by the scores of positive reviews it's been receiving for the past several weeks (not to suggest that this is inherently an indication of quality).

This was simply a thoughtful and wonderfully energetic installment that stands impressively well on its own merits whilst giving the franchise as a whole a much needed shot in the arm since it fizzled out with a spark on the back of Nemesis.

There's so much here to please hardcore fans, passive enthusiasts, and even the completely uninitiated. Character (which is incredibly well cast, I might add) introductions as nostalgic and epic, and so to for the dialogue, in addition to being shot and stylized in a way that pays beautifully fitting tribute to Star Trek's legacy.

Although few of my interests lie with TOS, the fact that something so gratifyingly solid and well-produced bears the name "Star Trek" make me a most satisfied fan of the franchise indeed.

Although I'm sure you would enjoy and appreciate superficial bits and pieces of it, probably not.

Everything is very much tied in to that which made Star Trek...Star Trek, and although the effects are very impressive, and the dialogue filled with plenty of humor, there's no real escaping the fact that what you're watching is undeniably Star Trekkish film (especially when something happens/is said that makes the fans keel over with applause).

If you're not a fan of action/sci-fi you're not going to like it. If you simply didn't like Star Trek because it was Star Trek, you might still want to give it a shot. I'm a Star Trek homer, but even the people I went with who weren't liked it. They at least found it entertaining.

I liked it though, I'm anxious to see what may or may not happen next with the franchise.
Renzo
Saw it this afternoon and loved it. Zachary Quinto as Spock steals the show.

Gonna go see it on Wednesday. Hope it's good.
Joss Weatherby
Saw it for a second time this afternoon. I really like it.

Lots of action, good work with the character/actor paring. Good music.

I like the direction of the story/universe reset. This and Bond have proven that there is good potential for resets in the future.

Yeah, I didn't mind the new bond stuff either. I just picked up Quantum of Solace on DVD today, so I'll watch it tonight.

I enjoyed it quite a bit but wish it would have stayed away from the time travel/alternate reality type of stuff. Regardless of that I was thoroughly entertained. I liked this Kirk better than William Shatner's.
boris_the_bear
so i have just downloaded it. i watched the first 10 minutes, then clicked through the entire movie and finally shift-deleted it. what a bunch of crap. how can they use the same set of visual FX for 50 years - fog, smoke, sparks etc. and the acting is ..oh gosh!
