What would you do if you had no Internet access for a year? (pg. 16)

If you're a college student like me, you have to use the Internet for college emails and schoolwork. I just distinguish both "Internets" so to speak as work online and fun online. I'm usually just doing fun online at night before I go to sleep. I get all of what I want done in the daytime without resorting to being addicted to one subject, be it working, studying/doing schoolwork, reading, lifting weights/running/boxing, watching TV, playing guitar, playing games be it video games, ping pong, pickup games etc..., socializing, etc...
If I was without the Internet for a year I'd probably watch more TV. I already have my together.:haha: :)

Internally, you know you need the internet... the problem is that you overuse it... this is your personal problem. I already told you before that I would never do something as extreme as completely cutting it out of your life, but you disagreed with me.

With this thread, you are publicly exposing your internal affairs and using it as a tool for forcing yourself to do what you want even though you have not internally resolved whatever it is that prevents you from using the internet responsibly.

You're trying to use the forum as a way to keep yourself in check by using our posts as support, whether we do it constructively and give you advice or whether we do it by humiliating you: this probably serves as a deterrent for you, but it only keeps you from posting here, it doesn't keep you from using the internet privately -- which I think you should.

I repeatedly tell you that this method won't work for you, it will only publicize your personal thoughts -- it's akin to posting "I am going to cook meat tonight, I PROMISE!" then posting "Damn it. I had vegetables instead. I guess I have no willpower to do what I think of doing."

Obviously, that's not failure, that's just the person changing their mind. Can we make them cook a steak? Can we truly do that? Can their posting of their intention to cook steaks help them?

Or is that something 100% internal?

I'm telling you... look inward. Because if you simply cut off the internet, that would be just like saying "I've noticed that I eat too much meat so I'm going to FORCE MYSELF to become a vegan right now and that will help me cut back on my meat consumption in an intelligent, healthy way. Even though I know I'm an omnivore and that becoming a vegan will not truly help me. Then I will go back and eating meat after some arbitrary length of time and my meat consumption will magically become moderate."

You are intelligent, I don't know why you're doing this. Why do you avoid acting on serious, deep introspection? Yes, it's harder to do things that way... and it will require a lot of work. But better to actually fix the problem than to make it go away for a while and come right back to it when your off-line period is over, huh? Have you even considered that?

I know you think a lot about your own mind. That is a habit of intelligent people. If it's a good solution, you must put it to use, even if it's difficult. Your problem, from my viewpoint, is that you don't act on the more difficult solutions that you come up with and instead go for more simple, but extreme, approaches. I strongly discourage that in myself and in others. It only sets you up for failure.

Alan Carr should write the Easy Way for the internets, lol.

I don't want this thread to be all about me, Akridrot. It originally started as a thought experiment, and I wanted people to post their speculations on what they would do without net access.

And I already know why I use the net so much anyway. It's because I have no friends in offline life, and no one who shares any of my musical interests. The net is basically my only "social" experience these days, other than talking to my gf.

When I go without the net, I get so ronery. :clown:
