And neither are NFL guys, who's average career life-span is about 3-5 years. Look what happened to Anquan Boldin last year... he got his face and jaw smashed catching a ball and was unconscious. A few weeks of eating through a straw and he was back on the field after being expected to miss the rest of the season and playoffs.

I just think hockey is less complex and therefore more appealing to simpletons (not referring to you). That's not a blanket statement, because I know the NFL has it's fair share of knuckle dragger fans too. But it's more of a thinking man's game than people assume, except for the 1 on 1 positions on the outside like receiver and the defensive backs on the other side of the ball. Playbooks usually have 800-1000 plays for offense and the same for defense; it takes years in one system to start nailing it down. By that regard, I think it's a more sophisticated and better sport.

All that sideshow bull with the chicken dances is annoying, I'll give you that... I can't stand it. And, baseball, yeah... that seems more of a refined skill than a sport. I mean, don't get me wrong there are some awesome athletes in baseball, but you also have fat tubs of that play only because their hand-eye coordination is so good. Plus, having no clock is boring. I like watching baseball though, especiallt towards the last couple months of the season and into playoffs but only because I'm originally from Boston and was indoctrinated into Red Sox Nation from birth. haha

like i said, i have played both sports competitively, and i just think you just do no understand the sport of hockey enough to make those assumptions. The intricacies of ice hockey are very numerous, there are many set plays, but you don't really call them as opposed to adapting and just playing. The adjustments are made more by the players (coaching is importnat to develop this), because there is no huddle and it is the player's job to adapt without a earpiece to tell him how to;)

I'm from Minnesota, so I love hockey. That said, I played football for 12 years, and I can assure you that it separates the men from the boys unlike any other sport I've seen. I don't think there's another sport that meshes physical toughness with strategy as well. If anything is wrong with football, it's actually that it's too brutal - I broke my femur twice in three years.

concussions from football made me the retard i am today. It is also why i played goalie.:p

i played slotback in football (a canadian football position, think of it as an extra hb.) I give props to football players, just i think that in hockey the players need to be the ones thinking more than the coaches. Also: most hockey players know how to read.

simpletons?

argue later, leaving for the habs vs sabres game now:p

We played a Slot-I in high school, so I know the position. Didn't realize you'd played both. I never played formal hockey (always played basketball during the winter and baseball during the spring), but loved playing boot hockey with friends. No pads = lots of bruising.

But I'll concede the point about football players not typically being that intelligent - other than LB, QB, and Center, there isn't a whole lot of thinking involved beyond memorizing plays. That said, most of the hockey players in school were not much better. :p

haha.. what? of course I do. we evidently have different tastes in sports that we like, but that doesn't mean I don't get them.

seems to me that the intelligence of football players is highest in the middle of the line.... from QB outward. By the time you get to the edges, you have more of those who can't read and write. DE's, Safetys, DB's, and diva WR's wouldn't typically be those you'd see studying for the MCAT's (unless you're name is Myron Rolle).

It varies more than you might expect. There are obviously outliers in everything, but some of the smartest guys I played with were WR's and Defensive Ends.

This is a little off-topic, but I'm really torn as to whether I'd let my future kids play football. It's fun as hell, and can teach a lot, but my mother was right - it really is too dangerous.

I was told at age 20 that my knee would never be the same again - and true to form, I developed some minor arthritis by 22. Given that injury is a pretty common outcome, and that the culture around football doesn't necessarily reward intelligence, it's a tough decision whether to allow someone to get involved.

and probably the reason why 85% of pro players right now have painkillers part of their dietary program. :D

but yeah. we're talking about hockey and professional football here. two very different prespectives on how to play the game, and the amount of energy it takes to succeed. i do think every position in football is unique in it's own way, and has to be done properly, or you could probably see your team give up a touchdown, or a busted play loss for yards.

I hear ya man. The stereotype doesn't cover everyone; I've met a few models that had a brain too, but for the most part they are mental-midgets.

Sucks that you've head your knee busted up and your leg snapped a few times. I have the same kinds of reservations about allowing my kids to play that sport too someday... who knows how freakish the kids will be in 15 years; I see high school kids now that look like NFL players did when I was in high school.
