in polish pig = świnia, so it comes from swine, which can also describe a person |

You know, I was just pondering the sort of basis for this etymology today. 'Swine' has a sort of negative connotation, because it essentially describes the creature when it is living. But we assign different connotations to the word 'pig' or 'pork' - as though there is suddenly a positive aspect to the very same creature, in that it has the potential to be consumed. What if more things had this same sort of hierarchy of connotation? Or names, perhaps? We could rank one another by the structure in which we are named pertaining to our individual edibility or perhaps even relative consumerism - just think of the potential!
Holy I'm stoned. |
