one exception i can think of is aphex twin - drukqs... not a mix, but still a journey.

What I was trying to explain was that a good album can take you on a journey as well. The problem is i'll bet if you polled everyone on the site they wouldn't be able to say they've listened to a good trance album.

Well for me it started when I used to stay with my dads at weekends. he had an amazing sound system and would have a few cans and listen to the prodigy album extremelly loud. I would just sit there playing playstation loving it. That break and enter track is a favourite.

He got hold of the first Euphoria tapes and blasted those to. My love of trance started.

At school garage was getting big (stuff like artful dodgy, dj luck mc neat etc) Also locally there were loads of pirate stations, mostly played garage, but some had drum n bass and others happy hardcore. Used to record those on tape bringing them to school to listen at lunch etc between football and fighting. Loaned them to my mates, who got into it aswell.

I started using Ejay to try make my own stuff than fruityloops 3. So for me I started loving the music, FOLLOWED by trying to make it. I would assume this happens for most aswell

Virtually every club in the world plays EDM music, and people flock in their millions. I still love my trance, but mainly clubs I go to play Electro and Funky House (in london anyway) trance is a big evetn for me and dont do it very often (as its kinda expensive)

I dont think you can evaluate EDM success by the money it makes as most lovers dont buy the music. I download Armin Van Buuren and listen to DI.fm a lot, as well as cheekily downloading stuff like moby etc... Dont judge me as I do spend a lot visitng clubs to enjoy the music.

So to summarise. EDM is fooking huge

I think this applies to EVERY single person who makes dance music. Hardly gonna start trying to make it if you dont even like it are ya...

Pretty much. EDM is huge with probably 5% of the marketing and distribution other genres get...at the very best under 10% the marketing and distro money gets thrown at EDM. Yet the music has amassed a huge huge following worldwide. Which is a function of the quality of the music and the dynamics of EDM that has attracted so many people. People who seek it on their own with very little marketing. So when you guys are signing your music to EDM labels, make sure you sign to labels that will get out there and get your music into hands and mouths.

I think its a bit of a mistake by the major labels to have neglected EDM so much, as EDM grows, big labels will have to compete with small labels that are able to acquire talent for cheap because there arent labels actually competeting for the talent. So a small label can make a breakthrough with a huge hit and reap the benefits because they can easily afford the going rates of producers.

OK Flame me for saying this.

EDM is drug music. We all know that. Most people that go to EDM events are high during the show and most of the time don't even know who's DJ'ing. To top it off ask them where they going, and they say A TECHNO CLUB/SHOW.

Yes, they refer to everything EDM as TECHNO.

IMO, if you really wanna make bank, you gotta either create some new sound and coin it, or make some mainstream stuff.

All your big DJ's want their songs to be played on TV & Radio. That's why they make their radio remixes. Eric Prydz, PVD, Armin, Tiesto, Deadmou5, Deep Dish, Ferry Corsten, and a whole lot of others have their share of cheese.

Once you're on TV or Radio, that's when you start making money. Not by sales, but by bookings, working on remixes for others, appearances, merchandise, etc. Once you're mainstream, people will follow you.

I have a close friend whose got lots of tracks done. She has a beautiful voice and is always on tour in Europe and the Middle East. But yet, people are clueless as to who she is HERE in her hometown of LOS ANGELES. Why? Her songs get airplay in other countries but the US.

I dont do any drugs when I go to EDM events. =/. Once in literally a blue moon if someone has some weed, sure. Im sure Hip Hop folks smoke as much weed, crack, shoot heroin as people do drugs to EDM.

Also I think the scene is changing and more people are not using drugs, and drinking or enjoying the scene through the music and atmosphere. When people are new, I can see them getting into the music via drugs, because some dopehead gives it to them so that someone new can feel the music through the drugs, but in the longrun not everyone uses drugs to the music. Especially when the ages go up, mostly just alcohol.

That said, you dont have to be a big success in America to enjoy a healthy career in EDM. European countries, Latin America, Japan would be more than enough. Also, if you get big in Europe or Latin counties, then America will start to catch on.

I don't do drugs either, as a matter of fact, when I see people do them it makes me feel very uncofortable. But we're a dying bread.

Electro is finally the "IN" thing right now because it gets major airplay and trashups are dime a dozen. Well, at least here in LA. Electro house & trashups are everywhere now. Everytime I hear a DJ play the Madonna vs Pjanoo trashup it makes me wanna puke! lol

Lol so many people have no clue. You should all be quitting your day jobs for all the money waiting for you in the industry.

The fact there is an abundance of commercial sell outs is what makes it more profitable for a talented new comer with a chip on his shoulder and a passion for what he does.

It's all about patience, passion, and dedication. Any music will thrive if you get the right personality creating it. Music is just sounds, so many of the people in the world will like music for different reasons. (Attraction, charisma, a good story, etc) And once you have a base of people investing in your sound (both money and time wise) it's time to ship the paper.

Stop allowing BAD labels to market you and do it yourself. And when I refer to bad labels I am referring to 95% of them. This is an industry where everything rests on your own shoulders.

In Europe.

In the states EDM is "Techno." Techno is Alice Deejay, Tiesto, and every other EDM genre out there.
