this is the problem i have in my area.baltimore is a hip hop town.occasionally ill get a gig playing at a place where they want an electronic dj.because i know how to use the equipment the promoters usually say "why dont you just play hip hop you could get more work"thankfully i dont dj for a living so i refuse to play hip hop.i could play a lot more out here if i played hip hop and threw some dance in here and there but i just refuse to do it.im a dance dj and thats all there is to it if they want a hip hop dj theres tons of them around.
my advise would be if you need the work or really want to get your foot in the door just keep doing what your doing and try to build up your side.i would try to use the venue your at now as a good resume to jump into another venue that will let you be more creative.good luck!!

Yeah, really sad that after 20+ years of the , this is all the mainstream twats in this country still prefer to listen too. I'm guessing there won't be much difference next decade either.

i mean i understand that some cities are just hip hop cities.and i dont have a problem with that. i dont dislike hip hop i actually like it,well some of it,especially early 90's hip hop which i am a huge fan of.
what i dont like is how narrow minded it is when you have the same promoters and the same owners starting and restarting clubs here just to make a quick buck and close them down.only to reopen them under a different name later.
they dont try anything new.they hire the same tired old dj's.and they play the same tired old music.over and over and over.when i go out to baltimore to what would be a "mainstream" bar or so called club if you can call them that, i can tell you what im going to hear for the night.im going to hear rob bass- it takes two,sir mix a lot,something by lil wayne,and journey- dont stop believing before my night is over.id rather eat shards of glass then go to a baltimore club nowadays.
theres actually a niche here for electronic music but i doesent grow because the promoters keep thier thumb on it by hiring dj's who are their friends.and they play the same tired old music.sandstorm is still played here because of these djs just to give you an example.
i think one day it will change here,but i think its a long way off.i just hope im part of it when it happens!

My best advise to you is to pick some of the higher tempo House/EDM influenced tracks and then use that as a bridge to go into hip hop and then back out to house. You may also want to look into getting some Baltimore Club Music in your set. Very high energy style that transitions well with House.
One option is to basically look at almost anything Pitbull has put out lately such as Calie Ocho (sampled from 75 Street Brazil) or Krazy (sampled from Cream). That should give you enough of a bridge to get down to the 80-90s (give or take) where most Hip-Hop/Top 40 is at.
Check into crack4djs.net as well. They have some remix's and what not that can also help you out with getting from one side of the fence to the other.
BTW strangely Sandstorm (Darude), One More Time (Daft Punk) and Satisfaction (Benny Benassi) can actually keep a hip hop dancefloor. Im amazed here in hawaii when someone uses those records and hip hop people get going to it.
Unfortunately in most Top 40 clubs its not a DJs job to break people to alot of new sounds (House music that wasnt sampled into a smash Rap hit). Freedom is only really there for the warm up DJ. I find it funny when someone breaks a brand new record in a top 40 club and it makes everyone clear out. 2 weeks later said record is on the radio and you spend the night having it requested every 5 minutes.
Well hopefully I gave you some more options to check out for your sets.

There's any music tipically going around the 100 to 120 bpm mark? I mean, there's lots of 90-95 bpm stuff in my HD, but when trying to connect it to 120bpm stuff there's nothing (almost) inbetween. Some things i've found are:
Beastie Boys - Integalactic
Moby (honey, bodyrock, etc.)
some junkie xl (elvis remix)
fatboy slim
Anything, anyone? Same happens with 150-170 bpm stuff (don't care much for hard-trance, and there's another gap before the DnB spectrum)

Another thing you can do is to look for songs that have a bpm change built-in, to aid in transitioning back and forth. IMO, this helps to sound like a directly intended impact instead of a desperate attempt to cram "your" music in to "theirs".
