Las Vegas...North American EDM capital? (pg. 2)

Biggest thing to remember is that in this economy, Vegas is doing whatever it can to get people to come back, which is why they are back to being Sin City instead of a more family oriented place.
Vegas will never top LA for a big place in EDM, but it will always have the cash to throw at DJs to get them to play there. |

Pool parties suck.
No flow, no vibe. Boring. |

i saw the clips from Tiesto at Rehab this year and i have to agree....
the crowd is just in clueless, they didn't respond to any of the tracks he was just droppin.
Pool partys are for posers...its more of a "Be Scene" crowd |

Vegas on it's best day doesn't have a patch on Ibiza.
Yes, there are parralells, such as the relaxed rules or lack of them, a collective party atmosphere and some of the music but the same or even as good?
No way. Any Dj that says that doensn't know what they're talking about and IMO, took all the wrong things from the island.
Vegas suffers too badly from D-bag and slut-bag over-infestation, over commercialization, but the main thing it lacks is the spiritual element that ibiza has. You can't quite put you're finger on it's there and you feel it.
Vegas - you can't wait to leave after 3 days, and ibiza - you're crying because you've got to go home after weeks.
Vegas is like Ibiza's ugly, overindulgent and tacky younger cousin. Fun, most definitely, but not the same experience.
As for BBC, which is probably my main source of media these days, they;re saying that because the UK EDM scene is completely dead and with the economy down, Brits just aren't flying to expensive Ibiza....but they will go to the states because it's still cheap with the exchange rate and it's something different.
Vegas also follows trends, it does not set them. It goes with what's cool and does what others do but does it in a bigger way, which is great and unique, but it's not a pioneer in that respect.
If you ask, me (and I'm biased) LA is EDM capital at the moment. On any given weekend, you can see a top progressive, trance or house DJ in either a big superclub setting or a small intimate venue.
I swear to god, it's like being back in the mid 90's in London all over again :D | Dude, you cant compare a desert to and freaking island , Vegas is more about top 40 type clubs. EDM will always be a back seat to those kind of clubs in vegas. |

Since we depend so much on the leisure market we will never be a big EDM city. Everyone comes here, so you get all kinds of music preference outside of EDM. And the promoters need to make the crowd happy. WHich is why they have hip hop dj openers and bug the others to play hip hop mash-ups and remixes.
For the big names we get a few people out for it. But the crowd is mainly those not into the music, but have been hyped by someone else saying that this is the #1 dj from some obscure magazine from some obscure location.
We do have great things going on in the city though, just look at what Ice was, Faarsheed, and now Jordan. So while I would never agree we are the capitol, we certainly are better than most. |

seems like a good waste of dj talent.
Look at the labor day lineup. Why would someone book Carl Cox to do a pool party over a nightclub booking? It just doesn't make any sense to me. |

NYC beats out Toronto for bookings, but most people i know who have partied in both the NY and Toronto scene say Toronto is much better city to party in.
NYC and LA/SF have always been number 1 in north america to me.
You guys are lucky :p
However it has been interesting to watch Las Vegas's scene expand, it definitely is a notable city. |

In defense of my town..
Lets face it when people want to party for a weekend everyone wants to go to Vegas. 24 hour drinking helps but, so does the many multi million dollar club and pool venues we have to choose from. It is very true and accurate that most of this is pointed and the top 40 and llok at me crowd but, we still have 7 nights of EDM events and pool parties on the weekends (no matter what you may think of them people go). More over many of us that sat back and watched the Top 40 take over now work in positions to make small changes. Ultimately vegas is always about the money but, the EDM crowd is making a solid showing.
That being said:
Mondays - Godspeed @ Foundation Room
Tuesdays - Patio @ Pure
Wednesdays - Godskitchen @ Body English
Thursdays - Tabu @ MGM Grand or Ghostbar @ Rain
Fridays - House Room @ Risque or Patio @ Rok
Saturdays - Hello Perfecto @ Rain
Sundays - Goodlife @ Moon
If you were an alist DJ the place seems great as the venues are great and the crowd is primarily a tourist one. I still think LA and SF are some of the best cities but, remember the crowd in vegas is from everywhere as people are on vacation which makes it a bit different and exciting each time.
I will now stop being a shill for Vegas ;) |

Las Vegas is NOT the edm capital of North America.
I have seen several references of this in the past couple months and I can not figure out where this came from and why.
I am out there every few weeks...and anyone that goes to vegas on a regular basis (also anytime other than Memorial Day/Labor Day) knows that finding edm options on a friday or saturday night is not easy. Rain on Saturday night is basically the only option.
When you attend a edm club in vegas - the vibe is usually horrible - most of the folks in the club are not into edm anyways - so the vibe is off (meaning, its like playing a techno track at les deux/mood/greendoor/insert any hip hop hollywood club here.) Also, the strict dress codes and girl/guy ratio rules dont help.
I think vegas has all the elements and infrastructure to be a top edm party destination - but its not. Just as in movies, just cause you have the right parts, doesnt mean its going to be a good movie.
Most (if not all) the clubs are in hotels. The hotels have the nightclubs to bring people into the hotels to possibly gamble at the off peak hours (late night shift). So the nightclubs priorty is bring people to the hotel - and not operate a great nightclub, like a stand alone nightclub has to do. |
