The State of Trance.....

I have heard this conversation EVERYWHERE as of late, so what better place to continue and get opinions then on tranceaddict:
What do you think of trance nowadays?
Seems like everyone has their criticisms lately. To be honest, I am just absolutely bored out of my mind with (most) of the stuff being put out recently. To the point that going to the club USED to be about the music...... and now I have such little expectations, that I am fully aware that I am mainly going out to see my friends. (and even then, I rarely go out to the club anymore because I have found a hundred other things far more entertaining.....)
While there are still some great producers out there, I truly feel as if the difference in productions 5-10 years ago far outshine today's stuff.
I spoke with a DJ (who shall remain nameless) who made his opinion clear: "too many people are trying to push out as many SH*T tracks as possible just to get their name out there. And no one is actually taking the time to put together anything of quality." Does anyone agree with this?
I know this discussion has been brought up before, but this is the first time in my "EDM" career that I really feel strongly that trance is on a serious downturn. :( :( (also im really bored at work and need something to read!! LOL)
*****This is not an argument, just a discussion. NO ONE is going to change anyone's mind on what they like or do not like; so if we could cut the bull and have an intelligent discussion on this, I am sure people would be much more appreciative. ***** |

| It's kinda true. I have been listening to a lot of "older" sets lately cuz the newer ones aren't getting it done. There is still quality out there but it's just surrounded by crap. Ever since the DJ Mag poll has become "mainstream" and it seams that DJs care more about what they are ranked in the DJ Mag poll than the quality of their music or sets. Plus more and more crappy vocal tracks are flooding the scene(PvD - Home is this year's tune much like Filo & Peri - The Anthem was). I remember when ASOT was 2 hours of decent to good trance with a few good vocals sprinkled in, now it's almost all cheesy vocal tracks. You've got to realize when a DJ you like has turned south and move on to a new one who gives you what you want, there's plenty of options out there. |

I agree from a fan stand point I do believe too many people with computers, Ableton, Reason, Fruity Loops or Logic Pro have been just pumping out tracks that just sound the same and go no where. What really made this do it is everyone asking all the big guy's what to do in order to get gigs, so everyone listen's and does this and this is the result of what you get. People just shoving out there to get there name on a label, and on the online download sites and expecting to get booked somewhere around the world because of this.
It use to be quality over quanity now the table's have turned and you have to listen to like 50 good tracks to maybe find one or 2 decent one's.
Thats just my 2 cents on what I think has happen to Trance |

its not so much a specific DJ for me, its trance in general. I am not very specific in who I listen to as long as they make my ears happy. (plus I also listen to a lot of techno).
I am just remembering the old days of ISOS type-toons, Sasha, oakie essential mixes, the old armin, airwave, gouryella prodictions, etc.....I mean that was some serious TOONAGE with a ton of creativity involved in each track/set!!! :D
I even look back at think of when DJ's would drop an Underworld toon or when PVD used to be completely EPIC nights (pvd is still cool but lets be serious, his sets now in comparison to, say your arc/twilo/roxy days are completely different!) |

i think it's the most valid explanation. we garner the same expectations about clubbing experiences (and music) as we get older, yet our expectations about almost everything else change. moreover, our priorities shift. the last time i went out was in june, and i can't even tell you the time before that. And, the only reason i went out in june was because of friend from el salvador was in the city. otherwise, i would have been perfectly content studying for the gmat, watching a movie, or sleeping. also, the level of energy needed for frequent clubbing almost requires unemployment. this crap i just wrote is relevant because i believe trance music and the clubbing experience are inescapably intertwined. for those of you who don't know what inescapably intertwined means (i know you understand kel, but i fear others don't), the point is if your clubbing experiences suck, you probably aren't going to feel the same way about the music, and vica versa. while i still listen to trance here-and-there, i'm nowhere near as enthusiastically involved in the musicas i was when i was going clubbing on a regular basis. |

I personally think that gone are the days of the DJ and we have entered into the era of producers. It seems every DJ has become a producer and every producer a DJ. I'm thinking of trance when i describe this cause I'm just now starting to listen to various forms of house and techno(so i dont know as much about those djs). All the trance DJ's are whoring thier own productions and sprinkling in a few other tracks. Every set seems to be the same collection of album tracks, remixes and label mates mashed together and then duplicated in set after set.
I've only gone out a few times this year, partly cause it's boston and the trance talent draw isnt big and when they do come, its on a thurs night, partly cause you know whats going to get played. I think we are in phase where EDM and trance specifically is becoming fairly mainstream and were are just in the natural growing process of that. Think of all the other generes where a new band came in relatively unknown and were great and their sound stayed the same as more and mroe fans listen to them.
So ya, trance is stale right now. I think we need a rise in DJ's who play new from various artists/labels. Radio shows have done a good job of expanding DJ's play lists (PVD plays a ton of music he normally woldnt play in a set on his show), but in general, its just added more of the same.
One DJ i respect is Matt Darey. The dude has totally changed his style from classic trance to electro-house type music...i dont always feel his sets, but at least he's progressing |

| I think the genre is just becoming more popular and more popular means more mainstream. There are still a lot of great stuff and a lot of not so great now. |

Agree with that as well it was always popular but now with these producer's working with main stream artists and vice versa it will cause that to happen. |

I haven't gone to a trance event from April up until this past weekend.
Even though Askew isn't my style - I still had fun (loads too).
I won't lie that I had a bit more fun last night with Motor City Drum Ensemble. While at that party, I felt young (much older crowd)... Love, I actually felt like I was around some immature bitches ie.. someone going out of there way to step on my toes :gsmile: even though it's 21+ (way to be uber immature if I don't even know who you ARE)
It's all good though. I support the people I love.. I don't bother to see anyone who I think is just okay anymore.
I love all types of music - I'm not gonna be some elitest bitch fag - if it's good music... it's good. I don't care what it is. :D |
