...until I heard him at Stereo. WOW! I've seen Roger in Montreal several times and he's always sucked. But man, the beatdown he gave at Stereo was unexpected and unbelievable. I have new respect for the S-Man. He turned that club out with an 8 hour set, which is more impressive because he played the night before in Miami for 8 hours. (I hate seeing DJs on the back end of marathons. They are usually so drained/coming down from the night before. Not Roger.)

Sounds like everyone had a great time.
I wish I could have seen Roger since I love his cheesy side too.. I can't imagine what I would have thought of him on Sunday. :)
We enjoyed what we saw of him at the Zoo on Saturday. |

Stereo was impressive. Despite all the drama leading up to the opening including the wait in line (I was one of those who had put 3AM as my time limit to leave) it was all worth it. The changes they made have taken Stereo from a club with world class sound to one of the best clubs in the world (including Miami, Ibiza, London, Berlin). It was fun seeing all of the old Stereo regulars there and it really felt as if it hadn't been gone for so long.
I didn't really like the music Saturday night but had a blast. Skipped Sunday which I don't regret since I was a friends birthday party all day Sunday.
The Monday party was amazing. Of all of the outdoor parties I have attended (including Europe and the US) I have to say I have the best times at those in Montreal...I'm not too sure why but I do. The last 4 hours of music was exactly what I wanted to hear and would have loved a few more hours.
Since Stereo was behind the Monday party I'm hoping we get to see some techno acts at the new Stereo... |

Sunday, I was beat from Saturday. I had no intention of going for Roger. I respect what Roger has done for music, but I think him a pretty cheesy DJ...

| I've never had the chance to check this club out and I'll be in Montreal in a few weeks for a stagette, but I was on the fence about going this time... I was planning on saving it for a future trip but thanks to this review, I've changed my mind :D |

Good plan. Make sure you go, even though they don't announce the line-ups. You won't be able to pick your jaw off the floor. |

Great reviews from everyone! I felt like I was *almost* there.
Kaniz, Barbara wrote about the piknic and how insane it was on her website - next year I want to try and make it. I loooove her piknic sets. |

What exactly did they change inside?
from Graham's description did they move the DJ booth to the other side? where is the sitting area? |

The inside is completely changed. About the only thing that is the same is the stairs into the main room.
When you get to the top of the stairs, you are at the back of a giant speaker stack that walls off a good portion of the dance floor.
The seating area is accessed via stairs to the left and right of when you first get into the dance area. It's about 5 or 6 steps up - not too high, but enough to separate it from the main area. The front of the seating area is lined with glass so it has an open feeling - and feels very much like it's still in the party and not off to the side.
The seating area is tired a little bit - I think about 3 levels of seating.
The dance floor is more like a bit rectangle - some risers are at the one end, big screens on opposite walls.
The wall across from the stairs is also just a bunch of speakers IIRC, and the DJ booth is fairly high up - there is no way to be at eye level with the DJ. The floor of the DJ booth seemed like it was maybe 8 feet or so above the dance floor?

for a rough ascii representation - the glass wall of the DJ booth is flush with the wall of the dancefloor and fairly far above it. My friend complained 'I don't know where I'm supposed to look!' (took awhile to see where it was). Personally, I like that - everyone was focused on the music / dancing / getting down with their friends - not trainspotting the DJ.
When you first get into the club after frisking - there is minimal seating, the washrooms are to the far end - kinda open, you see the stall doors, separating that area from the bathroom is a low long rectangular sink.
Along the back wall was a bunch of machines with water inside. Seemed like this area got a bit of fire damage and wasn't quite the final product yet.
Very very different from the old Stereo. |
